This is position is located in the Bureau of Provider & Support Services, Richland County.
Are you the One? We are looking for a Coding Specialistwho will work under the supervision of the Reference Administration Program Manager and in collaboration with the division and bureau teams, the Coding Specialist supports code change requests received as critical updates to our MMIS system and additional requests, as needed with undefined frequency, due to project outcomes, policy or procedure revisions or enhancements. With support of the team, will become a subject matter expert (SME) to ensure all stakeholders and other requestors understand processes and ownership to reduce claims processing and other errors. Proactive feedback and recommendations should be a priority when performing all duties and communicating to supervisor for escalation and engagement with appropriate stakeholders.
- Code update requests are received with predictable frequency, i.e., CMS quarterly updates as well as change requests due to policy or procedure needs with varying frequency and volume. All code and pricing requests received will be part of the overarching system update led by the Reference Administration team and in partnership with other inter-agency process owners. Requests and team member tasks will be reviewed and assigned based on priorities. Assignments will be completed within target deliverable dates and, roadblocks to meeting deadlines, will be communicated with supervisor. Schedule should be managed with minimal management engagement.
- With Reference Administration Team and internal stakeholders’ collaboration, identifies areas for improvement, gaps, potential issues, based on observations or escalations, and updates documentation for team and other process owners. Reoccurring request errors should be escalated to supervisor to address and resolve issues. Feedback on processes and empowerment expected.

- Participate as a project team member, as needed, or assigned, to support reference administration interests and bureau priorities aligned with strategic goals and agency mission and objectives. Other duties, as assigned, i.e., mentor to new hires, lead role for improvement efforts (not a formal project) and to assist other teams within and outside of our bureau.
- Complete required training, on time. In collaboration with immediate supervisor, meet to review training interests to include knowledge development, for existing or new duties, performance and for future career path.

Minimum and Additional Requirements
A bachelor’s degree and relevant professional experience in social service programs, business administration, general administrative management.
An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered with prior State Human Resources approval.
Necessary Requirement: A Certified Professional Coder or Certified Professional Coder-A, Certification awarded through AHIMA (American Health Information Management Association) or AAPC (American Academy of Processional Coders).
Preferred: At least two (2) years of experience in medical coding. In-depth knowledge of HCPCS/CPT codes, ICD-10 PCS codes assignment and Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) regulations and guidance.

Preferred Qualifications
- Knowledge of SCDHHS’s mission and an understanding of the critical nature of the agency’s work to support Medicaid members, providers, and partners.
- Basic knowledge of the capabilities and intricacies of information systems.
- Ability to effectively receive, plan and complete time-bound requests that require research, collaborating with internal and external partners, periodically with tighter timelines than others.
- Ability to interpret business needs and document requirements.
- Ability to analyze complex technical data and reduce to logical order to complete requests.
- Ability to communicate in a thorough, clear, and concise manner to improve efficiencies, and educate collaborators to achieve a common goal.
- Preferred:
- Prior experience working with Medicaid policy, process and/or systems.
- Knowledge of Medicaid Management Information System (MMIS) including troubleshooting and business processes.
