Job Summary:
The Safety Specialist will be responsible for supporting and developing multidisciplinary College of Engineering (CoE) safety programs necessary to maintain a safe and healthy environment for faculty, staff, students and visitors. The Safety Specialist will report to the Director for Safety and work closely with College of Engineering faculty, staff and students. This position will also work in coordination with the UW-Madison Environment, Health & Safety (EHS) department. This position will be the primary safety contact for the College of Engineering Graduate Student Safety Committee and undergraduate student organizations.
Responsibilities: Identifies and develops plans to address safety issues, provides consultation, and tracks and manages cases in a specific area of specialty so all work, recreation, and research can be performed safely and in compliance will all applicable federal, state, and local regulations and standards. Makes recommendations for the control of identified hazards and assesses hazards using relevant regulatory methodologies.
- 5% Secures resources and schedules logistics for a safety program
- 10% Identifies operational and safety issues and develops improvement plans and standard operating procedures
- 60% Provides knowledge and guidance to internal and external stakeholders including leadership, in a specialized area of safety such biosafety, chemical, hazardous materials, agriculture, lake, radiation, and Occupational Safety and Health Act (OSHA)
- 5% Directs logistical activities, allocates resources and investigates components of specific health and safety cases
- 10% Communicates findings to necessary stakeholders
- 10% Reviews industry updates and may assist in developing safety communication materials based on industry changes

Education:
Required
Bachelor’s Degree
Focus in an occupational/environmental health/safety, or STEM field strongly preferred. Safety Certifications desirable.
Qualifications:
0-3 years of experience in an occupational or environmental health and safety profession. New graduates will be considered. Applicant will have the ability to conduct safety inspections and hazard analyses, initiate and manage projects, and develop positive working relationships with a diverse group of individuals in an academic environment.
Preferred:
– Knowledge of occupational and environmental safety principles, including use of engineering/ administrative and personal protective equipment.
– Knowledge of OSHA regulations, including the OSHA Laboratory Standard.
– Experience creating and/or conducting engaging technical safety training programs.
– Experience with Microsoft Office Suite and/or Google docs
– Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with diverse faculty, staff and students through strong interpersonal skills and effective oral and written communication.
– Ability to work independently and with teams as needed.
– Ability to manage multiple tasks.

It is anticipated this position requires work be performed in-person, onsite, at a designated campus work location.

The position requires excellent organizational skills as well as strong communication and interpersonal skills. A high degree of motivation, demonstrated capabilities in planning and prioritization of tasks, ability to be flexible in work assignments, independent problem solving and analytical skills are also important to the position. New graduates will be considered.
