I. DEPARTMENT DESCRIPTION/MISSION STATEMENT:
Financial Services employs approximately 65 employees and is responsible for Finance functions including, but not limited to financial reporting and accounting, accounts payable, payroll, budget, cash management, debt, compliance, purchasing, risk management, special projects, alarm billing, parking enforcement, meter reading and utility billing customer service. The department manages the City’s financial resources in the most cost effective and efficient manner. Financial Services provides relevant, timely financial data to the public and decision makers, and safeguards the City’s assets through appropriate controls, accounting and procurement practices.
Boca Raton has received the Government Finance Officers Association’s (GFOA) Distinguished Budget Presentation Award for the last 31 consecutive years, and the GFOA’s Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting for the last 33 consecutive years. The City of Boca Raton has a AAA bond rating by Moody’s Analytics, Standard and Poor’s and Fitch Ratings.
II. ELIGIBILITY:
In addition to general eligibility information contained on APPPENDIX A of the Program Guide, candidates seeking to be considered for an Internship in Financial Services must meet or comply with the following requirements:
1. Is currently enrolled in, or will be entering, their junior year, or higher, at an accredited College or University as a full or part-time student.
2. Has completed basic undergraduate level coursework in accounting, business and/or finance.
3. Has a current minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale.
4. Able to work a minimum of 12 hours per week not to exceed a maximum of 25 hours per week (typically between the hours of 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday thru Friday).
5. Must be authorized to work in the U.S.
Preference will be given to those candidates with previous experience in accounting or finance OR with those candidates working towards a bachelors/masters degree in accounting or finance.
III. QUALIFICATIONS:
Candidates selected for an Internship will be expected to comply with all City and Department rules and regulations. In addition, candidates will be expected to:
1. Be a self starter of good moral character and a strong work ethic.
2. Possess strong communication and organizational skills.
3. Be detail orientated, with problem solving and analytical skills.
4. Be able to work independently with minimum supervision.
5. Establish and maintain good working relationships with associates and supervisors.
6. Have the ability to multi-task.
7. Show proficiency in Microsoft Excel.
IV. PROGRAM TERM:The Financial Services Department accepts Interns during each college semester.
V. AVAILABLE POSITIONS:
The Financial Services Department is currently hiring for one (1) intern.
VI. EXPECTATIONS:
Candidates selected for an Internship will be expected to comply with all City and Department rules and regulations. In addition, candidates will be expected to:
1. Wear appropriate business casual attire during working hours, in accordance with the City of Boca Raton’s policy.
2. Conduct themselves in a professional manner.
3. Maintain the confidentiality of any information obtained through the Internship Program.
4. Record their time daily by clocking in and out each day and manage schedule with assigned Division Internship Coordinator.

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS: To be eligible to receive Paid Leave and to contribute to the 457 Deferred Compensation Plan, a part-time employee must have worked at least 1,040 hours in the prior fiscal year
PAID LEAVE: Employees who work a minimum of 1,040 hours per fiscal year will receive twelve (12) hours of Paid Leave on October 1st. This Paid Leave shall be used no later than September 30th of that fiscal year or it will be forfeited. These hours may not accumulate and may only be granted with the approval of the employee’s supervisor. This paid leave has no cash value at separation of employment.
MISSION SQUARE 457 DEFERRED COMPENSATION PLAN: Employees who work a minimum of 1,040 hours per fiscal year will be allowed to participate in the 457 Deferred Compensation Plan. The City will not provide any matching funds.
