Under the general direction of the Associate Director, acts as the communications officer for the Feed the Future Innovation Lab for Markets, Risk and Resilience (MRR Innovation Lab), funded by an award from the United States Agency for International Development (USAID). Coordinate, plan, and implement a focused strategic communications plan for international development, policy, agricultural, economics, and related stakeholders. Establish and maintain connections with media and public relations organizations, key stakeholders, researchers and news service groups, and related entities. Develop resource and outreach strategies (events, print, web-based, and digital) related to the mission of the Innovation Lab. In coordination with the Strategic Communications office, responsible for writing and disseminating the results and impact of research supported by the MRR Innovation Lab to targeted media and industry stakeholder groups (related research organizations, development organizations, academic groups, etc.).

The Feed the Future Innovation Lab for Markets, Risk & Resilience at UC Davis is an international research program funded by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) that develops and tests ways to strengthen rural food security in least-developed countries. The Communications Manager connects the lab’s research to professionals in the development practice community, from our funders at USAID to national governments and international NGOs, who can use it to improve people’s lives.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

• Work in an office setting in a shared office area with consistent traffic and noise from office equipment, telephone conversations, computers, printers, etc.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
• Experience writing and publishing multiple types of content, from news and feature stories for technical or nontechnical audiences.
• Experience effectively communicating information with proper use of grammar, spelling, and punctuation, and style guides.
• Experience researching, writing, editing, copy editing, and proofreading communications material.
• Experience working in a communications/media relations setting using interpersonal and communications skills to interact and communicate with media, staff, faculty, students, and external colleagues and stakeholders and to develop and maintain ongoing professional relationships with a diverse range of people.
• Solid written, verbal, interpersonal communications, active listening and political acumen skills.
• Knowledge of key issues related to international development and related issues.
• Organizational skills to prioritize tasks, work on multiple projects, and meet deadlines.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
• Bachelor’s degree with experience in professional writing.
• Experience deciphering and translating technical academic research or other technical information for a general audience.
• Experience with Adobe Creative Suite applications, including InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop, Premiere Pro.
• Experience with USAID, KDAD, Agrilinks, creating partnerships.
