Summary

The College of Engineering and Computer Science and Engineering is seeking an individual who can work effectively with deaf and hard-of-hearing individuals by providing on-site CART services (Communication Access Realtime Translation) in a variety of settings, including but not limited to classrooms, research laboratories, small and large gatherings and meetings. This position is classified as onsite. Some remote work may be possible.

Applicants may be required to provide a demonstration of their skills during the interview process.

Responsibilities*

  • Provide quality in-person live CART writing services on-site in a 1:1 or one-to-many environment, including large screen displays of captioning.
  • Provide quality live CART writing services in a 1:1 or one-to-many environment through a variety of online platforms
  • Captioning equipment: steno machine, laptop, full-version translation software/license, and required accessories (e.g. stand and cables) will be provided by the College of Engineering if needed.
  • Provide contemporaneous verbatim visual representation of spoken English.
  • Provide contemporaneous descriptions of environmental sounds and other auditory information in written English format.
  • Provide in-person CART services for a variety of settings including regularly scheduled computer science courses on University of Michigan campus.
  • Provide CART in a clearly and accurately.
  • Work collaboratively with interpreters on an as-needed basis.
  • Maintain, as applicable, compliance with any national, state, or local licensure and/or certification requirements.
  • Accurately complete assigned tasks/duties, projects and paperwork promptly and within approved guidelines.
  • The ability to maintain a flexible work schedule, in order to meet customer demands.
  • Adhere to the National Court Reporters Association (NCRA) Code of Professional Ethics.
  • Travel Requirements: May be required to travel to various on-campus locations (including offices, labs, and classrooms) and offsite to meetings or conferences. Less than 25%

Required Qualifications*

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Ability to provide CART writing at 180 words per minute with at least 98.5% accuracy.
  • Proficient in use of Microsoft Office, Google Calendar and other common desktop/web applications.
  • Knowledge of and ability to effectively apply real-time stenographic theory.
  • Must have a combined master and case dictionary of at least 60,000 entries.
  • Provide timely responses through email/text.
  • Ability to provide fast scheduling turnaround time for meetings, classroom support, etc.
  • Ability to effectively communicate through email.
  • Ability to efficiently and accurately schedule calendar events via email
  • Possess Certified Realtime Captioner certification
  • Minimum of 3 years experience in CART services

Working Conditions and Physical Requirements

  • Able to effectively operate computer and other CART technologies for for extended periods of time.
  • Able to perform CART tasks while standing on occasion during academic gatherings, poster sessions, etc.
  • Able to work in an environment that is fast paced, dynamic, and customer service focused.
  • Able to work remotely via Zoom when required/needed.
  • Able to understand and record technical jargon as it relates to Engineering and in particular Computer Science.
  • Perform CART writing for an extended period.
  • Ability to provide transcription services upon request.
  • Possess the ability to work in a variety of settings, both indoor and outdoor, with variable lighting and temperatures, both large and small gatherings, classroom and research lab settings.
  • Ability to independently travel on the University of Michigan campus. Positive attitude, team player, good interpersonal communication skills and able to work across company departments.

Desired Qualifications*

National Court Reporters Association certification.

Work Locations

The College of Engineering and Computer Science & Engineering operates in a hybrid work environment consisting of both in-person and remote work. This position will be classified as a ON-SITE position within the Michigan Engineering STARR classification matrix which means working on campus 5 days per week. You can find more information here:

We would consider as few as 20-hours per week for a candidate who only wants to work part-time.
