Position Summary Information
Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit
The Office of the Vice Provost for Global Affairs has primary responsibility for shaping and implementing the University’s global strategy while supporting global activity across campus. UNC-Chapel Hill’s global strategy is articulated in the Carolina Next: Innovations for Public Good strategic plan adopted in 2020. Units in the Office of the Vice Provost for Global Affairs include Global Partnerships, Global Research Institute, International Student and Scholar Services, Global Education, Global Travel, Exchange & Sponsored Programs, Duke-UNC Rotary Peace Center, Global Development, Communications, and the Unified Business Cluster.
Position Summary
The Communications Manager in the Office of the Vice Provost for Global Affairs (OVPGA) enhances the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill’s global profile and advances the university’s global mission by developing a communications strategy, creating and editing content, coordinating outreach to numerous internal and external audiences using multiple media and channels, creating development messaging, and organizing academic and cultural programming.
The Communications Manager contributes directly to the university’s global strategy, articulated in the Carolina Next: Innovations for Public Good 2020 strategic plan, by communicating to various audiences about progress toward objectives under 7.0 Globalize, specifically objective 7.1, Enhance global branding of the University.
The Communications Manager assists with executive communications for the Vice Provost for Global Affairs and other university leaders by preparing briefing and background materials, developing talking points, writing speeches, and liaising with guest speakers.
This position develops content for the OVPGA and UNC Global, manages an annual content calendar, and develops efficient work flows and approval routing.
The Manager maintains OVPGA and UNC Global websites and social media channels. The manager is the main point of contact for media inquiries and the OVPGA’s liaison with University Communications.
The Communications Manager works closely with OVPGA staff and with units located in the FedEx Global Education Center and across campus to monitor, develop, publish, and amplify internal and external communications.
This position reports to the Associate Provost for Global Affairs and may supervise graduate fellows, interns, and student workers.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
Bachelor’s degree in a discipline related to the area of assignment; or equivalent combination of training and experience. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.
Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
Knowledge: Technical Possession of a designated level of technical skill or knowledge in specific area(s) and the ability to stay up-to-date with developments and trends in area(s) of expertise. Ability to demonstrate a methodical and logical approach to addressing customer needs. Ability to use innovative solutions and/or designs where appropriate. May be acquired through academic, apprenticeship or on-the-job training or a combination of these.
Knowledge: Professional Possession of a designated level of professional skill and knowledge in a specific area and the ability to keep current with developments and trends in the area of expertise, usually acquired through
professional development opportunities and/or post secondary education programs.
Communication Oral: Ability to convey information orally to individuals or groups to ensure they understand the
message. Ability to listen and respond appropriately to information from others.
Written: Ability to develop and deliver written information to individuals or groups to ensure that they
understand the message.
Consulting/Advising: Ability to provide advice and counsel. Ability to understand client programs, organization and culture.
Project Management: Ability to provide oversight for project(s) and all related activities. Ability to establish a set of tasks and activities associated with an intended outcome and timeline. Ability to ensure actions are performed and/or implemented to achieve the results of the project.
Organizational Sensitivity: Ability to understand the organization’s mission, the function of the specific work unit and how it works with other work units to serve the customer/client. Ability to understand the impact and
implications of decisions on the community and other departments.
Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
1 – 2 years experience working full time in a public communications and/or marketing position in an agency or university setting.
