Job Summary

The Communication Specialist in the Office of the Chancellor at IUPUI will focus on creating and sharing content with multiple audiences across a variety of platforms. The communication specialist will bring expertise to the website content to share information, help develop and execute public relations campaigns, and build brand awareness on behalf of the Chancellor’s Office, within the IUPUI and IU context.

The successful candidate will be responsible for telling compelling stories in a range of styles, writing and producing content for specific audiences, including parents, current students, faculty, alumni, employees, and campus supporters. The ability to work collaboratively and productively with others is essential, as is experience working in executive communication.

Department-Specific Responsibilities

  • Manages key stewardship and engagement activities within the Office of the Chancellor, including but not limited to the office’s web presence, correspondence, and newsletters.
  • Assists the Director of Communication in producing videos in support of the chancellor’s public presence.
  • Creates and shares original content that represents the Chancellor’s Office .
  • Works in collaboration with the Director of Communication to develop print, email, mailings, advertisements, and other appropriate marketing materials in support of IUPUI campus-wide initiatives.
  • Drafts content for correspondence, newsletters, websites, and mass emails; copyedits of print and web content; generates regular updates to Chancellor’s Office print material, including but not limited to brochures, posters, and flyers; and arranging for the delivery of said materials through mass mailings and digital delivery vehicles.
  • Serves as the key person for managing the Chancellor’s Office website, including developing content, daily monitoring, posting, and engaging with other users.
  • Oversees the website including tracking analytics and responding to situations that may fall outside of regular business hours.
  • Serves as project manager for Chancellor’s Office communication projects, including tracking projects and timelines, managing databases and mailing lists that provide infrastructure for distribution of materials via direct mail as well as e-mail.

General Responsibilities

  • Independently creates basic and complex communications for print and e-distribution on behalf of department or functional area within department and in support of departmental goals and objectives; communications may be interdepartmental; staff, faculty, or student-focused; or external.
  • Responds to inquiries and requests and explains policies, procedures, and context of communications.
  • Manages relationships with various internal and external stakeholders and creates communications coverage for relevant initiatives, events, and programs.
  • Prepares communications timelines and shares progress of communications toward relevant deadlines with manager, team members, and other relevant constituents.
  • Regularly monitors relevant news sites; researches relevant subject matter to increase knowledge in area(s) of specialty.
  • Utilizes various communications software programs and delivers communications in multiple formats to a variety of audiences.
  • May provide guidance to lower-level Communications Generalists.

Qualifications

Combinations of related education and experience may be considered. Education beyond the minimum required may be substituted for work experience. Work experience beyond the minimum required may be substituted for education.

EDUCATION

Required

  • Bachelor’s degree in communications, journalism, English, public relations, or related field.

WORK EXPERIENCE

Required

  • 2 years in relevant field

Preferred

  • 2 years of design experience and editing skills (both print and video).
  • 5 years of professional experience (communications, publications, marketing, non-profit, media relations in higher education or related field).
  • Graphic design experience.
  • Experience as writer/editor, publications specialist, communications associate, or other job where writing and editing are the primary responsibilities.
  • Experience working on digital platforms, including social media, website management, and CRM systems.
  • Experience in higher education or an organization or agency with a record of marketing/public relations work for clients with multiple audiences and many products (preferably at IUPUI).

Working Conditions / Demands

This role requires the ability to effectively communicate and to operate a computer and other standard office productivity equipment. The position involves sedentary work as well as periods of time moving around an office environment and the campus. The person in this role must be able to perform the essential functions with or without an accommodation.

Advertised Salary

$60,000.00 – $71,063.00 per year based on experience.

Work Hours

8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Some Chancellor’s Office events and public engagements may take place outside of regular business hours.
