Job Description

The Communications Department is a dynamic and creative team that serves as a full-service PR, marketing and communications agency within the government organization. The team is made up of experts in social media, video, web services, print services, graphic design, email marketing, brand strategy, project management, crisis communications, public records, and PR/media outreach.

The team works in partnership with the 26 departments and offices to get their messages across and provides guidance to do that within our City brand structure and communications strategy, for a simple user experience, no matter what someone’s preferred channel may be.

The department has been over the past few years, from city/county website of the year to top honors for the City brand. We are constantly innovating and striving to keep up with the latest best practices in order to serve our community.

Communication Administrators serve as liaisons between the Communications Department and City departments to ensure communication and marketing needs are met. The ideal candidate will have:

  • Experience with social media marketing, web content marketing, email marketing, surveys and engagement.
  • Proficiency in managing projects for all communications channels and campaigns.
  • Experience successfully building and managing client relationships.
  • Experience on brand implementation and brand compliance through established communications channels.
  • An understanding of marketing best practices and their application to digital communications.
  • The ability to quickly shift and adapt to changing priorities that come with working in a large organization led by a Council-Manager form of government.
  • Demonstrated ability to create content

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Responsible for delivering the desired message to residents, customers, media, and stakeholders using the best communications techniques for their audiences and their organization’s goals
  • Develop communications plans and/or campaigns for a variety of different City initiatives
  • Meet with Departments to evaluate existing or new projects to discern potential communication and marketing needs.
  • Work closely with the Creative Team to successfully apply brand strategy, standards, and styles.
  • Serve as project manager, working with departmental representatives to coordinate creative solutions – video, graphics, digital, online engagement, email marketing, event support, etc.
  • Work with Production Teams within the Communication Department ensure projects and initiatives are successfully completed.
  • Work with creative teams within the Communications Department (graphic design, video, web & social) to ensure projects and initiatives are successfully completed.

  • Cultivate strong working relationships with departmental representatives. Learn the business of the departments under the Communication Administrator’s portfolio.
  • Provide outstanding customer service.
  • Work with multiple, competing priorities and manage many projects simultaneously in various stages of completion.
  • Maintain excellent working relationships across the City
  • Work with department liaisons in partnership with the Community Engagement Office, plan public outreach efforts to ensure equitable access to government services and decision-making process.
  • Write, edit, and/or proofread content for a range of marketing and communications materials.
  • Use or learn to use various communication technology tools (email marketing client program, web content management system, public engagement platform, project management software, and emergency notification system, etc.) and be comfortable training others on their use.

Typical Qualifications
Education and Experience
Bachelor’s Degree in public relations, communications, public affairs, criminal justice or directly related field, five years of law or criminal justice enforcement experience that includes public communications experience and two years of supervisory experience.

An equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above, unless otherwise subject to any other requirements set forth in law or regulation.
