The Communications Department provides comprehensive strategic communications services that include media relations, marketing, crisis communications, public relations, brand management, graphic design publications, video production, photography, web communication strategy and content development, and social media strategy. It’s our job educate and inform our community, protect our organization’s brand reputation, and tell meaningful stories celebrating all things Gresham.
This is a full-time, limited duration position with an anticipated duration of two years and eligible for full benefits.

Position Description
The Police Communications Content Specialist will be a part of the City of Gresham’s Communications Department, reporting to the Communications Manager. This position will design, develop, produce, and coordinate a variety of communications materials specific to the police department including but not limited to social media, website content, newsletters, press releases and various other collateral needs. The Police Communications Content Specialist will often collaborate with Communications staff on visual tone, content, and timing to ensure both the police department and broader organizational goals are being met.

The Police Communications Content Specialist will
- Plan and execute written content creation supporting the work of the police department including but not limited to press releases, newsletters, brochures, flyers, and social media campaigns.
- Performs creative work in the design, development, and production of multimedia content concepts and layouts; designs, develops, and maintains a cohesive identity for content; collaborates with communications division staff on visual tone, content, storytelling, and timing; utilizes multimedia to promote programs and projects;
- Collaborates with police and communications staff on content development, community outreach, and information dissemination; archives and maintains project editing files for future use; writes social media content.
- Conducts analysis on communication best practices, tools, and trends, and formulates recommendations;
- Coordinate with media contacts as needed.

Qualifications
Knowledge of:
- Laws, rules, regulations, and ordinances affecting City policies and operations
- City government administration, organization, functions, and services
- Practices, principles, procedures, regulations, and techniques as they relate to assigned areas, such as marketing, public relations, writing for print, web, social media, and editing
- Web content management systems, data gathering applications, internet tools and research, and social media tools
- Publication layout, design, and tools
- Principles and practices of project management
- Communication principles, practices, and techniques
- Techniques for providing a high level of customer service to the public and City staff
- Modern office practices and methods, computer equipment, hardware and software applications
Ability to:
- Exercise discretion in confidential and sensitive matters
- Interpret, apply, and ensure compliance with applicable policies, procedures, laws, and regulations
- Analyze and interpret data; draw valid conclusions; develop reports
- Conceptualize projects; develop engaging content; write, edit, and proofread; select appropriate method and style to best communication information and ideas
- Utilize various communication software and tools, such as web editing, camera, video, image editing, and others
- Oversee and manage projects
- Influence and gain cooperation when there are competing or conflicting priorities
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships with all internal and external contacts
- Operate office equipment and technology tools including personal computers, laptop computers and printers, and presentation equipment
- Communicate effectively verbally and in writing; present information, proposals, and recommendations clearly and persuasively
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Journalism, or other related field
- One (1) to four (4) years of progressively related experience
Additional experience may substitute for education for a total equivalency of 5-8 years of qualifying education, training, and/or experience.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Understanding of media relations
- Familiarity with AP writing style
- Adapt to the changing needs of a fast-paced environment
- Basic photography along with photo/video editing capabilities
