Communications manager

Job Summary:

UW-Madison Extension connects communities across Wisconsin to university knowledge and expertise, with faculty and staff delivering programming across six institutes to families, businesses, nonprofits, and more. This position is designed for someone looking to manage a portfolio of projects, designing editorial processes, and overseeing freelance multimedia efforts to augment their own work. A self-starter able to flesh out ideas and actively engage peers and colleagues to bring the impact of their work to a broader audience will be ideal in this environment.

Responsibilities:

Develops and supervises the execution of communication programs and may supervise personnel and/or other resources in support of institutional or unit communication goals.

  • 15% Manages the day-to-day operational unit plans to align with strategic initiatives and to meet established objectives
  • 20% Plans, writes, and edits content for various internal and external stakeholders
  • 15% Plans and directs unit programs and/or projects to ensure adherence to deadlines and budgets
  • 10% Identifies, proposes, and implements new or revised unit operational policies and procedures
  • 35% Develops, implements, and delivers communication materials through various mediums to designated audiences
  • 5% Manage assignments and budget for freelance photographers, videographers, and other communications needs

Qualifications:

Required:
– Proven success creating and placing stories or human impact features
– Independent management of a set of communications projects
– Solid knowledge of current outreach communications best practices
– Ability to interpret data and research to translate into plain language narrative writing
– Experience interviewing coworkers and colleagues for public and internal content

Preferred:
– Creation of distributed outreach materials such as sample social media messages or press releases, customizable content
– Experience creating inclusive materials for diverse audiences
– Email marketing experience
– Institutional social media experience
– Multimedia experience such as photography or videography

Work Type:

Full Time: 100%

It is anticipated this position requires work be performed in-person, onsite, at a designated campus work location.

Minimum $65,000 ANNUAL (12 months)
