Department Description The newly formed Office of Wellness Education (OWE) in the UC Davis School of Medicine is focused on comprehensive wellness education across a broad and inclusive range of topics that affect wellbeing: physical health, emotional, societal, environmental, global concerns, and more. The creation of this unique program profoundly expands the educational scope of a school of medicine beyond the IItraditional focus on disease and its treatment. As a first-of-its-kind school of medicine unit, the OWE seeks to provide wellness education to our constituents – our patients, their families and their communities, our students, staff, and faculty, as well as the global community.

Responsibilities

The Communications Specialist position provides support to these wellness programs and the broader Office by strategically developing, using and maintaining various communication vehicles to express the vision and message of the services and educational programs offered. The incumbent will provide support and coordination with internal UCD communications teams and external vendors through marketing and advertising, digital and social media, media relations, internal communications, and other mechanisms to reach all audiences and stakeholders. The Communications Specialist will research, write, edit and/or produce clear and compelling written and electronic communications that influence audience action, including podcast scripts, newsletter articles, social media content, and website content. The communications specialist will serve as a subject matter expert and educational mouthpiece on select areas of wellness, either through their background/education or the distillation of other faculty expertise.

This position works in collaboration with UC Davis Health social media staff, public information officers, internal communications, online communications and marketing. This position will also closely collaborate with faculty and clinician experts, internal leaders, and industry field experts.

Required Qualifications

  • Experience writing, editing, proofreading, preparing, and producing correspondence reports and various types of professional publications. Experience in message development, audience identification, issues management, and overall communications planning.

    Experience with but not limited to web content management systems, web-editing tools, Microsoft Suites, major social media tools such as Facebook, Twitter and YouTube, web

  • Experience with creating externally facing content and public engagement or teaching.
  • Strong writing, editing, and proofreading skills to use language effectively and creatively, using appropriate writing guidelines to translate complex concepts into fay terms.
  • Skills to compose clear, persuasive original copy within deadlines and also repurpose existing resources to meet a variety of objectives.
  • Skills to shift and adapt writing style, voice, tone and vocabulary/comprehension levels for varied audiences (i.e. ranging from 5th grade level to practicing physicians) and also varied purposes (i.e. informative, technical, persuasive, motivational, educational; formal versus conversational; etc.). • •
  • Skills to independently identify and research issues and analyze complex data and information to formulate recommendations to resolve issues.
  • Subject matter expertise within a core area of wellness, or the ability to understand and educate the public on complex wellness matters.
  • Strong interviewing skills.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience with analytical survey data tools (e.g. Qualtrics, Survey Monkey, etc.)
  • Excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills to interact effectively with large and diverse group individuals from all levels of the organization.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision, as well as effectively as a member of a diverse team.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree and/or equivalent work experience, preferably in English, journalism, marketing, communications or a related field Professional experience in writing or applicable communications-related work in healthcare/education setting.
  • Familiar with UC Davis and UC Davis Health communication tools and standards Knowledge and experience with TeamSite and WordPress.

Special Requirements
