Pay Range

$86,910 – $107,916 Annually for the G04.2 level

$104,370 – $129,588 Annually for the G04.3 level

Please note that the pay range information is a general guideline only. Many factors are taken into consideration when setting starting pay including education, experience, the external labor market, and internal equity.

Job Description

We have an opening for a Communications Specialist (Writer/Editor) supporting the Analytic Tradecraft and Production (ATP) team in the Global Security (GS) Directorate. You will work with scientists, technical staff, and engineers who produce intelligence-informed science and technology (S&T) products that address complex national security issues. This position has four major areas of responsibility: (1) within a framework of broad policies and procedures, edit and write products that support intelligence programs across LLNL (primarily includes Z Program, E Program, and N Program); (2) work with the Technical Publications Group (TPG) and ATP to complete writing and editing projects from start to finish; (3) coordinate with TPG/ATP Communications Manager to prioritize work; and (4) support document requests from external partners. This position is in the Technical Information Department matrixed to the Global Security Directorate.

You will…

  • Provide comprehensive writing and editing services for large and/or complex, science and technology (S&T) assessments and projects across multiple media platforms.
  • Prepare products for sponsors and consumers in the Intelligence Community, ensuring compliance with security and Intelligence Community Directive (ICD) product standards.
  • Interface with other TPG writers/editors, graphic artists, and subject matter experts to ensure high-quality products and coordinate production element schedules.
  • Ensure that complex communication materials recognize the viewpoint of stakeholders and are consistent with sponsor/consumer needs.
  • Work with authors, project groups, programs, and/or departments to coordinate communications projects; tasks include assessing incremental input and multiple manuscript iterations and developing communication styles for technical and possibly sensitive material.
  • Serve as the quality check for production assignments through interactions with the Print Plant, designers, website developers, or multimedia professionals on complex production jobs.
  • Interpret complex technical information and translate it into various forms (e.g., Web copy, online newsletters, flyers, slide presentations) of easily understandable and non-technical communications.
  • Understand the full range of ATP’s scope (including IC analytic tradecraft standards, product dissemination, and analyst support) and interface efficiently with other ATP staff who support these tasks.

In addition, at the G04.3 Level:

  • Provide writing and editing services and/or coordinate the full spectrum of editorial and communication services (e.g., conducting interviews with scientists and writing articles, writing and editing content for reports, presentations, and Web-based projects).
  • Serve as project manager by defining technical communications strategies, messages, audiences, and key deliverables for a variety of complex and specialized products/projects, working closely with the ATP manager.
  • Provide comprehensive writing and editing services for highly complex, science and technology (S&T) assessments and projects across multiple media platforms.

Qualifications

  • This position requires an active U.S. Department of Energy Q-level clearance or active Top Secret clearance issued by another U.S. government agency at the time of hire. Also, you must have the ability to obtain and maintain Sensitive Compartmented Information (SCI) access.
  • Bachelor’s degree in English, communications, journalism, engineering, or a scientific area or the equivalent combination of education and experience in technical communication.
  • Demonstrated problem solving, analytical, and decision-making skills, based on aggregate information and the recommendations of others, which significantly affect the ability of the organization to achieve its overall objectives and long-range goals.
  • Ability to effectively interact with all levels of personnel, internal and external to the Laboratory.
  • Experience successfully working on multiple, large technical communication projects concurrently in a rapidly changing environment and attending to intense details with high consequence of error, as well as the ability to be self-directed, highly motivated, reliant, and dependable.
  • Advanced knowledge of and experience using style conventions, professional principles, and technical communication practices and standards.
  • Advanced proficiency with the Microsoft Office Suite, especially Word (formatting, style sheets, track changes, find and replace, and other features associated with technical editing reports that will be finalized as PDFs) and PowerPoint; experience with the Adobe Creative Cloud software suite; experience with WordPress or equivalent web editing. The primary work environment features the PC (not Mac) platform.

In addition, at the G04.3 Level:

  • Experience leading large, complex communications projects for a broad audience and/or diverse group of stakeholders and subject areas and working with multidisciplinary teams of contributors. Experience establishing commitments to schedule, cost, and standards of quality.
  • Ability to handle classified, unclassified, sensitive, and confidential issues with diligence, attention to detail, tact, diplomacy, and discretion.

Qualifications We Desire…

  • Experience working in the Intelligence Community (IC), ideally implementing Intelligence Community Directives (ICDs) 203 and 206 and supporting/understanding analytic tradecraft.
  • Thorough understanding of LLNL’s mission of producing high quality, intelligence-informed, and technically accurate S&T analysis that ensures analytic integrity, proper classification/protection, clarity of message, and focus on the national security mission.
