Pay Range

$104,370 – $129,588 Annually

Please note that the pay range information is a general guideline only. Many factors are taken into consideration when setting starting pay including education, experience, the external labor market, and internal equity.

Job Description

We have an opening for a Communications Specialist to support the Laboratory’s Weapons Infrastructure (WI) Program, where teams of experts from diverse fields work together to solve complex problems of national importance. In our uniquely multidisciplinary environment, you will work with scientists and engineers who are respected for their excellence in research and for their commitment to our national security mission. You will have many opportunities to interact with all levels of administrative, management, and scientific staff at the Laboratory to communicate highly complex science and technology information to a wide range of technical and non-technical audiences. This position is in the Technical Information Department (TID) and will be matrixed to the Weapons Infrastructure program in the WCI Directorate.

In this role you will…

  • Develop original content, coordinating and executing the full suite of communication services across a variety of platforms (e.g., editing and writing for print, digital, web, and presentations) and produce design layouts, and develop and/or make basic modifications to visuals.
  • Provide communications planning for short and long-term projects by developing and implementing key deliverables for high-level strategic communications, managing complex project schedules, tracking production costs, and coordinating the work of others; contribute to strategic discussions and work with subject matter experts to plan new or revised websites.
  • Interpret complex technical information and translate into clear, accurate, relevant, and compelling products appropriate to the targeted audience(s) and into various forms of easily understandable communications.
  • Define communications strategies, messages, audiences, and key deliverables for a variety of projects; review work of team members and provide technical guidance to less-experienced peers.
  • Collaborate with peers on all aspects of print and web-based publishing from concept through scheduling, writing, editing, review, production, printing and distribution, and/or web publishing; adhere to style guides and standards for communication products; serve as final quality check.
  • Direct photo and video shoots and employ basic design concepts in executing document layout for presentations and printed materials.
  • Plan meetings and events; coordinating logistics, asset production, and vendor interactions.
  • Contribute to the evaluation and implementation of new tools, technologies, and processes; help develop metrics and process improvement methods; may represent organization on working groups or committees.
  • Perform other tasks as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Ability to secure and maintain a U.S. DOE Q-level security clearance which requires U.S. citizenship
  • Bachelor’s degree in English, communications, journalism, engineering or scientific area, or the equivalent combination of education and experience in the area of technical communication.
  • Experience with strategic and executive communications, as well as in planning, developing, organizing, and writing content effectively across various types of communication platforms.
  • Significant experience leading complex multi-platform communication projects and teams with multi-functional groups, including establishing team commitments of cost, schedule, and quality.
  • Advanced editing/writing experience in multiple scientific or technical areas and advanced knowledge of and experience with editorial standards and technical language, usage, and style conventions.
  • Advanced written and verbal communication skills and experience collaborating and communicating with all levels of an organization, including senior managers, and able to handle sensitive and/or restricted documents and information.
  • Self-starter, comfortable multitasking with ability to work to deadlines and respond to tight, shifting schedules, including effective interpersonal skills and ability to work both independently and within a team environment.
  • Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite and Adobe Creative Suite tools (Photoshop, InDesign, Illustrator), with high proficiency with templates, charts, and various presentation formats with ability to create visuals that pair well with textual messages and align with communications outcomes.
  • Experience with content management systems, such as WordPress and Drupal, and web tools.

Qualifications We Desire

  • Advanced degree in English, Communications, Journalism, Engineering, or in a scientific area.
  • Experience directing photo and video shoots.
  • Experience planning large events and coordinating their execution.

Security Clearance

This position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level clearance. If you are selected, we will initiate a Federal background investigation to determine if you meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information or matter.
