Position Overview
The Cumberland County Department of Social Services (DSS) and the Cumberland County Department of Public Health (CCDPH) have received funding to implement an initiative which focuses on primary prevention by utilizing a whole person/family approach and addressing social determinants of health (SDOH). The initiative includes multi-disciplinary Case Management and Care Coordination teams responsive to community referrals to provide care coordination and case management services to address social determinants of health, address social needs, improve health behaviors and health outcomes, improve health equity, and reduce health disparities, reduce preventable hospital stays, and prevent and reduce child abuse and neglect.
The purpose of this paraprofessional is to provide direct, in -home, intensive services to vulnerable individuals, children and families in crisis, caused by poor family functioning and family stressors that weaken the family’s resiliency, thus, preventing them from coping with and solving their own problems. The paraprofessional will work as part of a team with social workers, parents and/or caretakers, foster parents, and professionals in other agencies to identify the specific needs of the family. Moreover, the paraprofessional will offer services to the family that will meet their specific needs thereby strengthening the family to either prevent the removal of the children from the home or facilitate their safe return home in a timely manner.
Examples of Duties
Duties for this position include, but are not limited to:
- Monitor visitations between parents and children in the agency and other locations, to include the home of the parents.
- Assist with assessing the parent’s need for improving skills and educating them on and modeling effective parenting skills to enhance parent-child interactions.
- Work with parents in their homes to teach them planning, organizing, and household financial management, cost effected shopping, proper housekeeping, personal hygiene, nutritious meal preparation.
- Communicate with parents concerning their goals and outcomes and encouraging them to follow through with their agreed upon goals and follow court orders.
- Provide parents with feedback on their participation and accomplishments toward achieving their goals and desired outcomes.
- Supervise children for parents and other caretakers to attend meetings or doctor appointments.
Employee is subject to be called upon anytime to help the agency respond to a public health emergency which may include, but is not limited to, outbreak investigations, staffing mass dispensing or immunization clinics, providing disaster relief, or other incidents (man-made or natural and intentional or non-intentional) as they arise, or any public health response requested by the Health Director.
Minimum Qualifications
Demonstrated possession of knowledge, skills, and abilities gained through at least one year of experience in performing tasks similar to the ones assigned.
Additional Training and Experience:
Parental experience is preferred. Experience and comfort in working with different cultural and ethnic lifestyles. Ability to reinforce sex education and knowledge or experience with substance abuse and its impact on families.
Equivalent Training and Experience:
Parenting classes for early childhood and adolescents. Certificate(s) will be required from training programs or volunteer agencies.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Skills for teaching, modeling parenting duties of discipline, nurturance, communication, and parent/child interaction.

- Ability to work as a member of a team.
- Skill in reading and written communication.
- Ability to engage in a positive client interaction with non-voluntary clients.
Must have or obtain and maintain a valid North Carolina driver’s license with an acceptable driving record. Background check and negative drug test are required.
