General Description
The Orange County Department of Social Services has an opening for two part-time Community Social Services Technicians. These positions are a 20-hour a week, benefited position. This position is responsible for providing assistance and intervention to individuals, children and families. Work involves providing transportation and supervised visitation between parents and children in the foster care program. This position communicates regularly and directly with a team of social workers in the child welfare division. This position requires schedule flexibility as the hours adapt to program participants’ schedules which can vary. Work after 5pm and some weekend coverage is required.
Work is performed under the general supervision of a unit supervisor or program coordinator with some leeway to exercise independent judgment with regular guidance. Supervision is not a responsibility of this class. Does related work as required.

Provides transportation services when needed.
Supervises contact between children and parents/caregivers.
Teaches, coaches, and models skills related to employment and/or parenting.
Teaches new skills in the areas of budgeting, financial planning, household management and home safety.
Uses problem-solving techniques in order to gain successful outcomes.
Maintains documentation related to all client contact.
Communicates information between clients, service providers, and other involved professionals.
Intervenes with landlords, utility companies, and employers when clients are in crisis.
Assists clients with locating housing and household furnishings; demonstrates how to locate housing, pay deposits, and organize moving and assists clients in completing applications for services such as requests for financial assistance.
Serves as liaison between service agencies/programs such as coordinating services with Employment Services, Child Support Enforcement, etc. Reports, verifies, and retrieves data collection within various reporting systems.
Develops detailed service plans with timeframes for task completion, reviews progress with client.
Provides support and assistance with outreach activities.
Performs shelter duty in the event of an emergency.
Performs general administrative/office duties as required, including typing reports and correspondence, entering and retrieving computer data, copying and filing documents, sending and receiving faxes, answering the telephone, establishing and maintaining filing systems, etc.
Performs other duties as required.

MINIMUM ACCEPTABLE TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE
High School or General Educational Development (GED) test equivalency AND one (1) year of human service experience.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
Possession of or ability to readily obtain a license valid in the State of North Carolina for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.

As with all positions with the Department of Social Services, this position may be required to serve in shelters in time of natural and man-made disasters including overnight and weekends. The duties assigned during this time may vary from your regularly assigned duties. Assigned duties will be at the discretion of the Social Services Director.
