Compliance & Ethics (C&E), Proactive Risk Engagement, Corporate Counsel

The Corporate, External and Legal Affairs (CELA) Compliance & Ethics (C&E) organization plays a key role in supporting Microsoft’s mission by fostering a culture of compliance, ethics and trust through world class counseling, programs, and investigations. The Proactive Risk Engagement (PRE) team within C&E brings together legal professionals, operational experts, and data specialists to put compliance on a proactive footing. We work across the company to intake, triage, and assess the root cause and scope of acute risks; we use data analytics to support investigations and extract and amplify risk insights; and we leverage our legal judgment, control expertise, and enterprise knowledge to proactively mitigate emerging risks. We take a cross-disciplinary, transparent, and collaborative approach to our work. We are looking for a like-minded legal professional to support the Operations team within PRE, which receives, processes, and triages all matters reported to Microsoft’s compliance hotlines, works with reporting parties to understand their concerns and with stakeholders to identify the best routes for resolution. Gaining a deep understanding of Microsoft’s business and having the ability to leverage information and data to spot issues and trends at the soonest opportunity are crucial to success in this role.

Qualifications:
Required/Minimum Qualifications

  • Juris Doctorate Degree or Equivalent International Degree
    • OR Completion of a Legal Apprenticeship.
  • Active license to practice law in a jurisdiction and capable of meeting admission requirements in relevant jurisdiction.
  • 3+ years experience as a practicing attorney working with laws impacting multinational businesses and organizations, such as bribery, corruption, trade, and competition.
    • OR equivalent practice of law.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Demonstrated experience in conducting investigations, including conducting interviews and drafting investigation reports, preferred.
  • Ability to effectively manage a portfolio of projects and activities across multiple business areas, compliance functions, and geographies.
  • Ability to build and maintain collaborative relationships across disciplines and seniority levels.
  • Interest in incorporating data and analytics into compliance practice and an open, curious, and growth-oriented mindset.
  • Excellent communication and writing skills and experience presenting to leaders.

Legal Counsel IC3 – The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $101,200 – $194,800 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $130,000 – $213,200 per year.

Responsibilities:

  • Support the Operations team by issue-spotting and risk-assessing escalations received through Microsoft’s compliance hotlines, triaging and assigning them in a timely, clear, and accurate manner.
  • Build strategic relationships with Microsoft’s worldwide investigations and compliance advisory teams to support escalation triage, assignment, and scoping activities.
  • Partner with PRE’s analytics team and C&E’s investigation community to support early identification and assessment of emerging risks.
  • Innovate on solutions, including identifying opportunities to leverage new technologies like generative AI, to further the effectiveness of Microsoft’s compliance hotlines, intake tools, and triage and assignment processes.
  • Work with regional compliance teams and control functions to coordinate proactive risk counseling, mitigation measures, and control improvements globally.
  • Support reporting responsibilities to leaders, Microsoft’s Board of Directors, governmental requests, and other stakeholders.
  • Contribute to the advancement of a culture of diversity and inclusion at Microsoft.
