Job Description
100 billion cells in our brain function in concert to regulate our behavior, cognition, and physiological responses. Deficits in the function of our brain result in devastating neurological diseases including neurodevelopmental, neuroinflammatory, neurodegenerative, and psychiatric disorders with a large unmet medical need.
The neuroscience department at the Novartis Institutes for BioMedical Research (NIBR) is seeking a data scientist with expertise in genomics to quantify the cellular composition of in vitro and in vivo models of neurological diseases. We seek to understand the mechanisms of neurological diseases by combining human genetics with genomics to identify novel drug targets, pathways, and signatures of disease. In addition to having the opportunity to make an impact on many neuroscience programs at different stages of development, you will join a large, diverse community of data scientists at NIBR that have a wide range of expertise, which will allow you to grow and explore new types of data analysis. Apply to join our innovative multi-disciplinary team encompassing human genetics, human brain-relevant cellular models, genomics, machine learning, and computational biology.
Depending on experience, this role can be hired at an Expert II Data Science or Senior Expert I Data Science level.
Your responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
• Analyze different types of ‘omics datasets to help identify novel targets, elucidate the mode of action of drug candidates, and characterize human pluripotent stem cell-derived in vitro and rodent in vivo models of neurological diseases.
• Design, plan, execute, and document computational scientific analyses.
• Curate, integrate, and mine high dimensional public and internal data.
• Contribute to the identification and implementation of newly published computational approaches, and the development and maintenance of state-of-the-art analytical tools and pipelines.
• Work at the interface between wet-lab biology investigators and data science experts to generate novel and actionable hypotheses based on the analyses of large-scale molecular pre-clinical and clinical data.
• Demonstrate (Sen. Expert I) or further develop (Expert II) good coding practices and ability to write reproducible code with version control tools such as Git or similar.
Senior Expert I responsibilities:
• All of the above responsibilities
• Communicate scientific findings through static and interactive visualization and reports (RMarkdown, Shiny, Plotly, Dash or similar), including web-based deployment of analysis results.
• Coach and teach other scientists who are developing their data science skills.
