General Purpose
This position is responsible for assisting the Land Steward and Community Garden Outreach Coordinator in the daily management of the City’s community gardens, natural areas, and other open spaces.

Essential Job Functions
- General maintenance and upkeep of community garden sites including the delivery of materials, trash and debris removal, signage posting, garden infrastructure repair, tool maintenance, and vegetation management.
- Assist with larger projects in the gardens and conservation areas such as plantings, invasive species removal, and infrastructure construction and repair.
- Assist with community garden work days as needed. Assist with vegetation management of planted and natural areas including but not limited to pruning, mulching, edging, weeding, and watering.
- Safely operate a brush hog, shredding machine, rototiller, trimmer, and other vegetation equipment as needed.
- Monitor gardens and conservation areas for invasive species, storm damage, misuse, etc. Assist with other park projects and activities as needed.
- Ability to organize and lead volunteer groups of varying sizes for work days related to community gardens, park cleanups, invasive plant management, tree and shrub plantings, and other projects related to city natural areas.
- Ability to effectively communicate with the public and volunteers about project details, site specifics, safety, the mission of the Parks conservation division, and offer educational opportunities.
- Ability to effectively log project metrics and volunteer data, including number of attendees, materials used, time spent, etc.
- Position may require the operation of City vehicles and/or personal vehicles in order to conduct City business.
Qualifications/Basic Job Requirements
- Ability to actively support City diversity, equity, and cultural competency efforts within stated job responsibilities and work effectively across diverse cultures and constituencies.
- Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion as evidenced by ongoing trainings and professional development.
- Valid Driver’s License. Operation of a City vehicle or personal vehicle to conduct City business without providing proof of a valid driver’s license to Human Resources will not be permitted. A valid driver’s license shall be defined as a current state of residence-issued license to operate a motor vehicle on public roadways. Position also requires the ability to be covered under the City’s vehicle insurance policy prior to operation of any City vehicles or non-City vehicles for City business.
- Minimum 3 years experience in the conservation field.
- Experience in landscaping and perennial maintenance preferred. Ability to work weekends as requested. Interest in conserving and preserving Burlington’s natural areas and open spaces.
- Ability to research and identify major invasive species and apply cultural control practices.
- Ability to use GIS to create maps and compile data is recommended. Basic computer skills. Ability to work well with others and independently. Exposure and interest in plant identification, dendrology, agriculture, water science, GIS, anti-racism, facilitative leadership, decolonized landscapes, soil health and permaculture.
- Willingness to learn and develop vegetation management and other skills as needed.
