Construction Project Engineer

Land, Buildings & Real Estate (LBRE) is the operational core of Stanford University’s physical campus. Who we are

The Department of Project Management (DPM) is responsible for the development, design and construction of major capital projects at Stanford University. DPM reports to the Associate Vice President for Academic Projects and Operations within LBRE, and currently includes a staff of professionals with backgrounds in architecture, engineering, construction and cost management. These professionals serve as Project Managers and Project Engineers, Quality Assurance Field Inspectors, and Project Coordinators, who work as a project team that involves multiple stakeholders to ensure the successful delivery of facilities that support the University’s academic mission.

DPM manages capital projects from conceptual project development, through design, permitting, construction and occupancy/in-service operations. We endeavor to plan and develop high-value, quality, long-term cost-effective facilities and landscapes that enhance the teaching and research objectives at Stanford, embrace our partnership with the community and reinforce our stewardship of Stanford lands.

Job Purpose

Support project managers in taking projects from original concept through final implementation on contained risk assignments (projects have mechanisms or managerial controls to minimize risk).

Core Duties

  • The project engineer will support project manager, senior project manager or Project Executive through the full range of project management cycle: initiating, planning, executing, monitoring, controlling, and closing. Complete sub-project and/or stand-alone elements of a project.
  • Manage components of large projects or lead smaller projects with formal mentorship of Project Manager, Senior Project Manager or Project Executive.
  • Draft and help execute comprehensive change management strategy and communication plan relative to project scope and stakeholders on a focused project; actively manage resistance to change.
  • Review project plans and proposals, and work with project manager to develop project objectives; identify project responsibilities by determining the phases and elements of the project; calculate time frames and sequence the stages of the project.
  • Oversee, coordinate, and perform technical aspects of project, with guidance, based on type of project manager support required (e.g., engineer, quality, scheduler).
  • Ensure the preparation of required project documentation.
  • Contribute to communication plan and change management elements.
  • The focus/ core tasks of this role will include:
    • Develop requests for proposals and assist in hiring consultants and contractors to perform work.
    • Review, track, and approve contractor requisitions and vendor invoices.
    • Obtain local (cities and counties) and regulatory permits for projects.
    • Resolve problems as they arise and proactively identify potential problems early in the process and develop strategies to overcome obstacles.
    • Organize project data (including schedules, budgets, permit data) through excel, SmartSheet, Bluebeam, GIS, etc.
    • Build relationships with schools/departments (building managers and facility directors) and other LBRE leaders with the goal of representing DPM
    • Coordinate and communicate with other project managers, project stakeholders within Stanford (students, faculty, and staff), regulatory agencies, and the general public.
    • Lead furniture procurement and installation, activation and building turnover effort.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

Bachelor’s degree in a related field and three to five years of related experience in management of projects of moderate size/complexity with limited performance risk, including project planning, scheduling, tracking, and budgeting, or combination of education and relevant experience.

  • Demonstrated project management ability to employ integration, scope time management, cost, quality, human resources, communications, risk, and procurement components.
  • Demonstrated resilience, diplomacy, influence, relationship building, and problem solving skills in a variety of situations.
  • Depth of knowledge in technical discipline/domain needed to deliver projects.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS*:

  • Frequently stand/walk, sit, perform desk based computer tasks and lift/carry/push/pull objects that weigh up to 10 pounds.
  • Occasionally use a telephone, write by hand, twist/bend/stoop/squat, grasp lightly/fine manipulation and lift/carry/push/pull objects that weigh up to 20 pounds.
  • Rarely kneel, crawl, climb ladders, reach/work above shoulder, grasp forcefully, carry, push, and pull objects that weigh up to 40 pounds or more.
  • Ability to maintain a valid non-commercial California Driver’s license.
  • Auditory acuity with ability to hear horns and bells.
  • Visual acuity with ability to determine colors for finishes.
  • Ability to climb scaffolding, ladders, stairs etc.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • May work in active laboratories or outdoor environments.
  • May be exposed to extreme hot and cold temperatures, be exposed to high voltage electricity, radiation or electromagnetic fields, lasers, noise > 80dB TWA, allergens/biohazards/chemicals /asbestos, or heavy metals or work on roofs at heights greater than 10 ft.
  • May drive vehicle day and night.
  • Must wear personal protective equipment as defined/required by job assignments, and dress for clean rooms.
  • May work extended hours, evenings and weekends.

The expected pay range for this position is $116,000 to $151,000 per annum.

The pay offered to a selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal equity and external market pay for comparable jobs.
