About the Department of Insurance:
The Indiana Department of Insurance protects Hoosiers as they purchase and use insurance products to keep their assets and their families from loss or harm. The IDOI also monitors the financial solvency of insurance companies in Indiana so that legal promises in insurance policies are honored.
Salary Statement:
This position traditionally starts at an annual salary of $42,900.
Role Overview:
The Consumer Specialist is the frontline for the Department in assisting consumers with issues regarding the business of insurance. The Consumer Specialist assists the public and other divisions of the Department with research and resolution of insurance problems.
About the Job:
The Consumer Services Division assists the public and other divisions of the Department with the research of insurance problems. In this position, you will assist consumers with issues regarding insurance companies. This includes being responsible for identifying and correcting violations of Chapter 27 of the Indiana Codes, interpreting policy terms and conditions to consumers and when possible, assisting in the recovery of benefits. This also includes violations related to Indiana’s enforcement of the Affordable Care Act (ACA), health insurance exchange, market reforms, and essential health benefits.
A Day in the Life:
The essential functions of this job are as follows:
- Review consumer complaints and prepare for processing adhering to Chapter 27 of the Indiana Codes.
- Compose letters to consumers and companies, and research insurance problems.
- Act as lead for ACA consumer complaints and correspondence to resolve issues and properly record/report inquiries
- Effectively communicate with other state agencies directly involved with ACA and the health insurance inquiries/resolutions.
- Properly direct and transfer health insurance exchange and/or other health care reform questions to the appropriate division/department.

What You’ll Need for Success:
You must meet the following requirement to be considered for employment:
- Prefer at least 5 years insurance-related and/or insurance claims adjusting experience.
- Bachelor’s Degree.
- Ability to learn ACA provisions, market rules and regulations.
- Specialized knowledge of the principles and practices of the insurance industry.
- Advanced proficiency in both verbal and written communication skills.
- Knowledge of insurance statues and codes.
- Ability to interpret and apply insurance laws, guidelines and regulations.
Supervisory Responsibilities/Direct Reports:
This role does not provide direct supervision to direct reports.
