GENERAL DESCRIPTION:

The Wyoming Department of Corrections is committed to public safety, high correctional standards, and a safe, supportive working environment for our employees. We are now seeking Correctional Officers for the Wyoming Honor Farm in Riverton. WHF is a minimum-level correctional facility responsible for housing approximately 290 inmates. This position is essential for maintaining the institution’s safety & security and is considered a Law Enforcement position receiving the 20-year retirement package. This is an entry-level position, and career/growth opportunities are available.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: The listed functions are illustrative only and are not intended to describe every function which may be performed at the job level.

In order to maintain institutional safety standards, the position requires the following:

  • Enforcement of rules and regulations.
  • Responding to post orders of varied assigned posts.
  • Modeling appropriate, pro-social behavior.
  • Supervising inmates in the performance of various jobs; modeling appropriate, pro-social behavior.
  • Assisting in a variety of searches, including checking for contraband items.
  • Observing daily inmate living, programming, work areas, and the perimeter fence line, reporting security violations.
  • Conducting daily scheduled counts of inmates.
  • Assuming duties of housing control centers, central control centers, and inmate living areas that monitor inmate movements.
  • Becoming familiar with inmate names and characteristics for easier identification of inmate movements and infractions.
  • Assisting in restraining unruly inmates, utilizing the minimum amount of force required.
  • Assisting in transporting inmates within and off institution boundaries, including inter- and intra-state predetermined destinations.
  • Assisting in processing newly incarcerated inmates or the processing released inmates.
  • Attending required training to perform duties at an acceptable level.

**Must not have a felony or domestic violence conviction.

  • Knowledge of security measures, techniques, and precautions necessary to maintain a safe and secure institution.

PHYSICAL WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Candidates must successfully pass a background/reference check, medical and psychological evaluation, physical fitness exam, urinalysis drug screen, and other pre-employment testing prior to the appointment
  • Candidates must have the: ability to work overtime as required; and the ability to work on any shift, holidays, and weekends.
