Copy Editor, Digital Threat Analysis Center

Microsoft’s Digital Threat Analysis Center (DTAC) is looking for an experienced Copy Editor with proficient communication skills and experience in reporting/analysis, editing, and fact-checking. DTAC’s mission is to detect, assess, and disrupt digital threats to Microsoft, its customers, and democracies worldwide. DTAC is part of Microsoft’s Corporate, External, and Legal Affairs organization, in the Customer Security & Trust organization, and leads much of Microsoft’s work to ensure that our customers are protected from the actions of advanced and persistent adversaries in cyberspace. Nation-state cybersecurity and influence threats are occurring with greater frequency, and at times, greater complexity. Helping our team communicate our team’s findings on these threats and risks, and their geopolitical consequences, to a wide variety of audiences and decisionmakers is an essential part of our approach to Microsoft, its customers, and democracies worldwide.

In this role, the Copy Editor will collaborate with DTAC analysts and leaders and leverage reporting experience and geopolitical knowledge to craft, review, and refine compelling written and visual reports and products for internal and external stakeholders and key decisionmakers. Coordination with DTAC analysts, editing, fact-checking, and creating and presenting visual presentations and products will be key elements of this role. The Copy Editor will also support internal and external distribution efforts, presenting DTAC key findings and analysis. Also, the Copy Editor will support the operations of DTAC more broadly working to coordinate the planning and execution of major events and projects.

The role is based in our New York City Times Square office; the role requires you to be in the office 90% of the time. Some domestic and international travel may be expected, estimated to be less than 10%. Most common travel locations include offices in Reston, VA, and Microsoft’s Corporate Headquarters, in Redmond, WA.

Qualifications:
Required/Minimum Qualifications

  • 1+ year(s) of proven writing, content design, information technology (IT), or coding/programming experience
    • OR equivalent experience.
  • 1+ years in journalism/media or similar role with experience reporting, editing, and fact-checking written content.

Other Qualifications:

  • This position requires verification of U.S. citizenship due to citizenship-based legal restrictions. Specifically, this position supports United States federal, state, and/or local United States government agency customers and is subject to certain citizenship-based restrictions where required or permitted by applicable law. To meet this legal requirement, citizenship will be verified via a valid passport
  • This role will require access to information that is controlled for export under U.S. export control regulations, potentially under the International Traffic in Arms Regulations or the Export Administration Regulations. As a condition of employment, the successful candidate will be required to provide proof of citizenship, U.S. permanent residency or other protected status under 8 U.S.C. § 1324b(a)(3) for assessment of eligibility to access the export-controlled information. To meet this legal requirement, citizenship will be verified via a valid passport.

Preferred Qualifications

  • 2+ years writing, editing, or producing public content in a fast-paced environment and under tight deadlines.
  • Excellent cross-group collaborator with experience building relationships.
  • General understanding and interest in geopolitics, social media, cybersecurity, and information integrity issues.
  • 1+ years producing actionable threat intelligence or strategic analysis through written reports and products is a plus.
  • Experience collaborating with front-line actor analysts, technical collectors, and threat intelligence partners in government and industry is a plus.
  • Fluency in multiple languages is a plus.

Technical Writing IC2 – The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $76,400 – $151,800 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $100,300 – $165,400 per year.

Responsibilities:

  • Coordinate and collaborate with DTAC analysts and leadership to craft, edit, and fact-check DTAC reports and other written and visual products for internal and external stakeholders and customers.
  • Content strategy: Collaborates with team members to execute on strategy through the development of content (reports, presentations, infographics, and other products) to convey DTAC analysis and findings for internal and external stakeholders.
  • Content improvement: Receives feedback from a team member and incorporates changes into content (reports, presentations, infographics, and other products) from across DTAC’s regionally focused teams.
  • Customer engagement: Address customer feedback in development and refinement of content (reports, presentations, infographics, and other products).
  • Expand partnerships internally and externally to build resilience in the information environment, increase speed of threat detection, and empower effective counter action.
  • Assist in the execution of DTAC operations to include written productions, coordination with external vendors and hosting of in-person events.
