The Open Innovation team in the Intellectual Property Group in Microsoft’s Corporate, External & Legal Affairs (CELA) division has a rare and immediate opening for a c opyright counsel position to help develop and manage policies, programs, and compliance with a focus on IP and ancillary issues related to data and artificial intelligence, in the United States and throughout the world.
Qualifications:
Required/Minimum Qualifications
- Juris Doctorate Degree or Equivalent International Degree
- OR Completion of a Legal Apprenticeship.
- Active license to practice law in a jurisdiction and capable of meeting admission requirements in relevant jurisdiction.
- 5+ years experience as a practicing attorney, with experience with regulatory and/or litigation experience on intellectual property law issues relevant to data and AI such as copyright, trade secrets, intermediary liability, and data related issues impacting digital and physical products and online services
- OR equivalent practice of law.
Additional or Preferred Qualifications
- In-house experience in a technology sector is a plus
- Keen business sense, ability to think strategically and communicate effectively
- Ability to communicate effectively across groups and stakeholders
- Ability to collaborate effectively across groups, manage complex, cross-departmental projects, and to effectively influence without formal authority
- Outstanding organizational and analytical skills
- Demonstrated ability to identify and prioritize key deliverables
- Ability to work efficiently and balance multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment
- Proven ability to work independently and as part of a team, and possessing the ability to lead, manage and motivate others
- Desire and ability to interact effectively with a variety of personalities across diverse internal groups, teams, divisions, geographies and cultures
Legal Counsel IC4 – The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $124,800 – $222,000 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $159,000 – $238,600 per year.

Responsibilities:
- Counsel the business on all aspects of copyright and related rights, trade secrets, data access and use in the context of artificial intelligence
- Keep informed of relevant legal developments as they occur and analyze their applicability to the company’s activities and objectives
- Represent Microsoft externally on issues relevant to copyright, data and AI
- Ensure compliance with relevant policies and develop and implement training for employees
- The mix and balance among these responsibilities is anticipated to shift over time
