Corporate Communications Intern – Fall 2023

As a Corporate Communications Intern, individuals will be provided opportunities for professional growth with challenging assignments, work with a variety of internal and external partners, and gain valuable experience in creating content for our membership and the communities we serve. The Corporate Communications Intern will also have the opportunity to meet with department management and leadership to learn about the corporate culture while gaining hands-on business experience.

Work Location: Onsite or Hybrid; Headquarters campus in East Lansing, MIWork Schedule: Part-Time approximately 15-20 hours during MSUFCU Office Hours (8:30am-5:00pm); A schedule will be determined around the intern’s class schedule. Occasional assignments to work at special events during evenings and weekends. Paid Hourly Internship: $17.00/hourDuration: Minimum of one semester, but intern is able to extend internship (part-time hours) until graduation if desired

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Write media advisories, press releases, and talking points
  • Monitor and track monthly media coverage and brand sentiment with Corporate Communications team
  • Create engaging content for social media platforms, blogs, newsletter articles
  • Pitch ideas and solutions to team members when finding an opportunity to elevate our work or processes
  • Assist in the creation/writing of various corporate communication pieces
  • Assist in the creation/writing and development of outbound digital member communication, print publications, print and digital advertisements, and other promotional materials as needed
  • Develop social media calendar and create content for social media channels and integrate content into multiple social media channels
  • Manage multi-project timelines and deliverables including monitoring, reporting, and performing research and analysis of projects, and supporting the Corporate Communications team in implementing our communication strategies
  • Represent the Credit Union at campus and community events
  • Take photographs and video to be used in corporate communication materials
  • Collaborate with the Corporate Communication team to populate, write and maintain content on our external channels
  • Develop and maintain key message platforms for a variety of initiatives and topics
  • Participate in training activities within the department with the learning and talent development department; such training helps to ensure employees compliance with Credit Union policies and state and federal regulations and laws

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Actively pursuing an Associate or Bachelor’s degree in public relations, communication, journalism, or related field required.
  • Outstanding verbal and written communication skills.
  • Thorough understanding of various social media platforms including Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Instagram, YouTube, and TikTok.
  • Efficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • Excellent editor and proofreader
  • Comfortable with public speaking and engaging with members of the community.
  • Good research and analytical skills.
  • Able to convert technical messages into easy-to-understand language
  • Ability to prioritize workload and meet strict deadlines.
  • Willingness to attend corporate events after hours and on weekends.
  • Displays high level of integrity.
  • Ability to self-start, think critically and solve problems creatively.
  • Ability to balance priorities to meet the needs of a fast-paced environment.
  • Understanding of communications, strategy, content development and channel delivery, preferably including media relations.
  • Ability to analyze content and channel effectiveness

Physical Demands and Work Environment

  • May be required to remain in a stationary position for an extended period of time
  • Ability to operate standard office technology, equipment and tools, which may include many hours of computer and phone usage
  • Occasionally needs to move about inside of office area
  • Exposure to potentially hazardous condition, i.e. robbery. Receives detailed instructions and procedures to be followed to minimize the exposure
  • This position is able to work in hybrid or onsite working arrangements
