Under the direction of the City Manager, Mayor, and City Council, the Corporation Counsel manages the Legal Department and serves on the City’s Leadership Team. As the chief legal officer, the Corporation Counsel provides legal representation for the City, its Council, and operating departments; being involved in all the legal matters in which the City has an interest. Additionally, the Corporation Counsel acts as Counsel to the City’s various boards and commissions and attends necessary meetings. The Corporation Counsel oversees a department operating budget of $1.5 million and supervises two Assistant City Attorneys, the City’s Risk Manager, the Senior Paralegal, and the Legal Secretary.

Compensation and Benefits

Elgin offers a market competitive total rewards package that includes a base salary range between $171,621 and $229,990 depending on experience and qualifications. Additionally, the City offers a comprehensive benefits package that includes medical, dental, and vision insurance, vacation, sick leave, personal days, holidays, car allowance, fitness center membership, voluntary 457(b) deferred compensation plan and a pension through the Illinois Municipal Retirement Fund. The City offers the opportunity for hybrid remote/in-office work schedules.

Desired Qualifications

The selected candidate must hold a Juris Doctorate from an accredited law school, be licensed to practice law, have admission and membership in good standing to the Illinois Bar and the U.S. District Court, Northern District of Illinois, and have a minimum of 10 years of experience practicing local government law, including supervisory experience over attorneys and other legal positions.
