About Correctional Center Nurse:
Two positions available. Screens the medical needs of all inmates at the Linn County Correctional Center under the direction of the responsible jail physician. Responsible for emergency treatment of all inmates when on duty. Knows the County’s Customer-Centered Culture principles, the County’s Mission, Strategic Plan and Core Values and demonstrates a commitment to customer satisfaction for all customers on a regular basis.
Essential Functions

  • Coordinates all medical problem transfer recommendations with the shift commander.
  • Performs lab draws per doctor’s orders and reviews results with jail physician for any new orders.
  • Passes medications and performs physical examinations within 48 – 72 hours of admission and establishes home medication regimen.
  • Provides phone assessments to the jail physician and Mercy Medical Center Emergency Room if transferring for further evaluation.
  • Follows all orders, both phone orders and treatment protocols.
  • Classifies inmate housing based on medical needs.
  • Assists the jail physician when evaluating inmates’ medical needs and assists with Psychiatric Nurse and Psychiatric Physician visits.
  • Coordinates with outside specialty clinics for care.
  • Responds to medical emergencies within the jail and provides immediate care which includes lifesaving care.
  • Coordinates all special diets with the food service staff and keeps accurate statistical records of all inmates seen.
  • Interviews and screens new inmates as requested.
  • Investigates cases of sexually transmitted diseases and provides appropriate care or refers them to Public Health.
  • Responsible for monthly chart reviews and maintains contact with the United States Marshal and Immigration regarding treatment of inmates under their jurisdiction.
  • Provides inmate education on new diagnoses.
  • Responds to weekend sick call if necessary.
  • Maintains and orders medical supplies.
  • Performs all other related duties as assigned.
  • Knows the products they personally produce and the customers of each product. Listens to the “Voice of the Customer “and closes gaps between customer expectations and experience whenever possible.

Minimum Qualifications & Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Nursing required.
  • Six (6) months to one (1) year of experience in acute care nursing required; or an Associate Degree in Nursing and three (3) to five (5) years of experience in an acute care setting or equivalent experience which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with the public and with professional and lay staff.
  • Ability to communicate and establish effective communication with inmates in a correctional center.
  • Ability to improvise according to the resources of the facility.
  • Ability to provide effective inmate patient education, make nursing diagnoses, implement, and evaluate nursing care, and establish and maintain professional relationships with colleagues.
  • Ability to perform consultation and education with community agencies.
  • Ability to interpret laws, policies and regulations and maintain accurate records.
  • Must have thorough understanding of techniques and theories of professional nursing, physical assessment skills and communicable diseases.

Special Requirements:

  • Possession of a license as a Registered Nurse issued by the State of Iowa.
  • Required to obtain the Certified Correctional Health Professional (CCHP) certification within two (2) years of awarded bid/employment with the cost to be paid by the Correctional Center.
  • Valid State of Iowa Driver’s License may be required.
  • Must pass a County physical examination which includes a drug test after offer of employment. Subject to criminal history review.
  • Regular work attendance required.
  • Must remain awake and aware of surroundings at all times.
  • Voluntary overtime may be offered; working involuntary overtime is mandatory.
