What you will be doing

The Legal Department has an opening for an experienced attorney with significant employment law expertise to become a part of its Field Operations and Employment Team. This hybrid position is located within commuting distance of our Northern California Office in Pleasanton. The candidate must be licensed to practice law in California and prepared to provide advice and counsel and represent the company in a variety of administrative and pre-litigation matters.

Principally responsible for defending Safeway, Albertsons and Vons in administrative claims, including drafting responses to the DOL, DLSE, EEOC and DFEH, responding to Attorney General Inquiries and assisting the business in responding to inquiries regarding alcohol and tobacco compliance. Also responsible for responding to pre-litigation demand letters and directing and conducting internal investigations as necessary. Provide advice and counsel regarding employment discrimination, wage and hour issues and ADA Access issues to internal clients. The position will also have responsibility for handling subpoenas, inquiries from regulators, customer disputes and commercial litigation.

The position will be based in Pleasanton, California.

Main responsibilities

  • Work collaboratively with Asset Protection, Human Resources, Management and Labor Relations to investigate and defend claims by current and former employees.
  • Be responsive to and develop good relationship with outside administrative agencies.
  • Negotiate favorable resolutions of matters, as appropriate.
  • Provide advice and counsel on employment discrimination, wage and hour and other employment-related matters.
  • Provide expert advice on ADA access issues.
  • Handle customer and other third-party disputes and claims.
  • Respond to subpoenas, search warrants and other requests from governmental agencies.
  • Support the Company’s diversity, equity and inclusion goals.
  • Work collaboratively with other members of the Legal department on projects and trainings; and
  • Managing outside counsel

The salary range is $150,200 to $181,000 annually. Starting salary will vary based on criteria such as location, experience, and qualifications. There may be flexibility for exceptional candidates.

What we are searching for

  • Minimum of 5+ years in private practice and/or in-house legal department experience in relevant areas.
  • Expertise in California employment law.
  • Substantive knowledge of employment laws and regulations, administrative procedures, court rules and legal research skills in order to effectively defend the Company.
  • Strong negotiation, decision making, interviewing, investigation, and problem-solving skills.
  • Good judgment, collaboration, interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and exercise excellent judgement and discretion.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Limited travel within California, and rarely outside of California; and
  • Regular and predictable attendance required.
