Operating within the core values and operating principles for the organization, the Counsel, Insurance Generalist will provide legal guidance and support to ensure AAA Life is complying with relevant laws and regulations in regards to its everyday activities. This position will also assist in handling legal matters, and mitigating risks within the organization.
Responsibilities
- Monitor, analyze and timely communicate legislative and regulatory developments affecting AAA Life’s business.
- Ensures the company’s operations are conducted in full compliance with applicable laws and regulations.
- Anticipate potential or future regulatory issues that present a risk to the organization and proactively engage business leaders to identify potential solutions.
- Advise various business stakeholders on regulatory matters pertaining to life and annuity product sales, underwriting, policy service, and claims.
- Provide legal guidance and support on issues affecting the administration of in-force life insurance and annuities.
- Effectively communicate and collaborate with all disciplines within AAA Life to provide informed regulatory advice and counsel.
- Work closely and collaboratively with cross-functional teams to support drafting of new or updated life insurance policies, annuity contracts, and/or riders and endorsements.
- Provide guidance and support on life insurance marketing material and sales illustrations for compliance with applicable regulations and industry guidelines.
- Research and draft memoranda on relevant insurance legal and regulatory issues.
- Work with internal clients on insurance regulatory examinations and inquiries.
- Represent the company in interactions with regulatory authorities and industry associations.
- Assist in the preparation and submission of regulatory filings and reports.
- Draft, negotiate, and finalize legal contracts and documents related to regulatory compliance.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- Juris Doctor (JD) Degree required.
- Member of the State Bar of Michigan preferred; Member of a State Bar required.
- Minimum 10 years’ of legal experience.
- Previous experience in insurance law, preferably as in-house counsel or in a law firm that specializes in insurance.
- Use various automated legal research tools, software, Word, Excel, Lexis/Nexis and or WestLaw.
- Prior experience performing the following functions:
- Legal analysis related to corporate business operations and functions.
- Prepare documentation reflecting the corporate legal position on issues, prepare internal memos with legal interpretations and recommendations for management.
- Render advice to business clients with an understanding of the corporation’s business operations, finances, and products.

For the states of California, Colorado, New York and Washington the pay scale is $131,950 to $197,926 and pay scales may vary based upon location.
