POSITION PURPOSE
The Office of Government and Community Affairs advances the Greater Philadelphia YMCA’s (GPY) mission by managing relationships with government and community leaders, advocating for policies and legislation consistent with GPY’s goals, and shaping local engagement initiatives that address current issues such as gun violence prevention.
Credible Messengers are neighborhood leaders, youth advocates, and individuals with relevant life experiences whose role is to help youth transform attitudes and behaviors around violence. They are able to connect with the most challenging young people because they:
- Come from the same communities,
- Were involved in the justice system or have been directly impacted by violence,
- Demonstrate integrity and transformation, and
- Are skilled and trained in mentoring young people.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Facilitates bi-weekly mentoring sessions with at-risk youth at one or more locations across Philadelphia & Montgomery Counties.
- Takes training to build knowledge around gun violence prevention, public safety, youth development, conflict resolution, de-escalation, and stress management.
- Recruits program participants & credible messengers as needed.
- Provides seasonal assistance with participant administrative intake and follow up for gun violence prevention program.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
ROLE SPECIFIC REQUIREMENTS
- Ability to connect with youth ages 11-24.
- Authoritative verbal communication skills.
- Ability to remain calm in high-pressure situations.
- Ability to deescalate inappropriate or threatening situations.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Ability to express or exchange ideas by means of spoken word to impart oral information and to convey detailed, spoken instructions to staff, members, children, and volunteers accurately, quickly, and loudly. Ability to perceive the nature of sounds by ear; ability to lift and carry 50-75 pounds; ability to maintain body equilibrium to prevent falling. Ability to move about on foot quickly; ability to stoop, kneel, crouch and crawl. Ability to sit or stand for long periods of time. Ability to judge distances and spatial relationships so as to see objects where they actually are and clearly see at 20 inches or less and 20 feet or more.
ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS
The physical environment requires the employee to possibly work both inside and outside in heat/cold, wet/humid, and dry/arid conditions. Frequently required to use personal protective equipment to prevent exposure such as hearing protection and rubber gloves.
Acquire and maintain the following certifications:
- CPR/AED/O2 (valid 2 years with exception of Aquatics to renew annually), First Aid (valid 2 years) obtained through the American Red Cross
- Requisite OSHA online trainings (valid 1 year unless otherwise noted)
- Mandated Reporter Training (valid 5 years)
- Additional training and development specific to your role as reference in onboarding packet.
