About Our Opportunity

The City of Asheville is seeking qualified applicants for the position of Crew Leader, Laborers at Harrah’s Cherokee Center in downtown Asheville. The Crew Leader will lead assigned staff in the daily maintenance, custodial, production, and event operations at the City’s civic center. This is a fast paced environment where planning, organization, and attention to detail are essential.

This is an exciting opportunity to bring a strong project management background combined with supervisory skills. The ideal candidate can train crew members and ensure adherence to proper procedures and safety precautions, and can also create and execute work plans related to facilities and setup for events. This includes evaluating potential jobs to determine necessary labor, tools and time necessary for completion. This position reports to the Event Services Coordinator in the division of Operations & Events.

Pay: $18.59 – $19.52, eligible for overtime in accordance with City Policy.

Schedule: Schedule will vary based on events. This is a full time, 40 hour per week position. A standard day is 8am – 4:30 pm. Evenings, weekends and some holidays will be required as needed for event coverage.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

Leads and coordinates daily work activities of assigned co-workers: confers with supervisor to obtain direction regarding work assignments and priorities; organizes tasks in order to complete assigned work; monitors status of work in progress and inspects completed work; coordinates and leads team meetings

Assists with complex/problem situations and provides technical expertise; assists with training and instructing co-workers regarding operational procedures and proper use of equipment; and assists with supervision of co-workers by reporting employee problems and providing input on disciplinary action and employee performance evaluations.

Leads and participates in opening and closing duties: unlocks and locks exterior and interior doors; implements opening and closing procedures for procedures; manages lighting systems; and performs interior and exterior walk through to determine needed custodial or maintenance tasks.

Leads and participates in custodial duties: dusts, polishes, disinfects, scrubs, vacuums and/or buffs floors, carpets, windows, restrooms, offices, arena, auditorium, meeting rooms, locker rooms, concourse, lobby, exhibition hall, and other areas as assigned; and restocks paper supplies.

Leads and participates in event support activities: reviews event memos; sets up and breaks down meetings, concerts, performances, and events, including chairs, tables, risers, stage, stairs, bleachers, road barricades and signs, power supplies, equipment, etc.; pipes and drapes auditorium seats; places table skirts and covers; launders linens; receives and responds to client requests; maintains floors, empties trash, monitors cleanliness of restrooms, etc. during events.

Leads and performs minor maintenance and repairs at facility: paints; repairs walls; replaces ceiling tiles; and performs routine maintenance and repairs on equipment.

Utilizes personal protective and safety equipment and monitors work environment to ensure safety of employees and other individuals; initiates any actions necessary to correct deviations or violations; and trains staff regarding the same.

Assists with other activities in support of facility operations: reviews timesheets; tracks work orders and project completion dates; monitors and recommends changes in staff scheduling to ensure adequate coverage during events; cleans windows; power washes facility; monitors inventory of cleaning and maintenance supplies and equipment; and initiates purchase requests for replacement materials, as needed. Manages third party service providers to ensure building preventative maintenance programs are performed, inspected, and documented in a timely manner.

Communicates with supervisor, other City employees, the public, and other individuals as needed to coordinate work activities, review status of work, exchange information, or resolve problems.

Processes a variety of documentation associated with department/division operations, within designated timeframes and per established procedures.

Operates and utilizes a variety of equipment, tools, and supplies to complete essential functions, such as vehicle, forklift, scissor lift, vacuum cleaner, carpet cleaner, buffing machine, mop, broom, cleaning supplies, bleachers, stage equipment, lighting systems, hand and power tools, trash compactor, etc.

Operates a personal computer to enter, retrieve, review, or modify data, utilizing word processing, spreadsheet, database, Internet, e-mail, or other software; and operates general office or other equipment as necessary to complete essential functions.

Education & Experience

  • High school diploma or GED (Required)
  • Supplemented by three (3) years of experience in custodial services, facility operations, maintenance or related field; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job.
  • Applicants with equivalent experience and/or education may be considered.

Specific License or Certification Required: Must possess and maintain a valid North Carolina driver’s license.
