POSITION SUMMARY

This position is Essential and is required to report to duty before, during, and immediately after a civil emergency.
Semi-skilled and manual work in maintaining various grounds, sports fields and recreation facilities, open space parks and natural areas. Oversees park facility use, reservations, and operations on weekends. Supervises, directs, and assigns work tasks to weekend Maintenance Worker staff. Primary work shift will include weekends. May be assigned to work holidays as needed. Facilitates the development of public trust and confidence in the City.
The starting rate for this position is $18.89-$21.72, depending on qualifications.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES

- Keeps the mission, vision and values of the City of Port St. Lucie at the forefront of decision making and action; builds strategic and collaborative relationships and interacts with others in a way that builds confidence and trust; provides excellent customer service by taking action to accomplish objectives, maintains high levels of work and productivity by generating innovative solutions to work situations.
- Assigns, allocates, oversees, and participates in the tasks and work of Parks & Recreation Roving Crew engaged in the maintenance and repair of 40+ neighborhood parks.
- Helps maintain equipment and facilities by performing manual labor and semi-skilled work, planning, and performing with minimal direction.
- Directs, trains, and oversees the work of at least one full-time and one part-time employee during weekend duty hours.
- Prepares fields grounds and courts for athletic activities.
- Performs tasks of painting, irrigation maintenance, and spraying.
- Performs sodding, seeding, trimming, edging, mulching, and similar work in parks and other City grounds.
- Performs litter control functions; cleans restrooms; sets up picnic pavilion reservations and other park areas for public reservations and special events.
- Performs crowd and traffic control during City sponsored parades and special events.
- Operates vehicles and equipment. Performs preventative maintenance functions on the vehicles and equipment.
- Acts as point of contact for multiple vendors.
- Makes daily written and oral reports.
- Coordinates leagues and public use schedules for all site facilities.
- Assigns tasks to staff, providing guidance in performance and completion of duties.
- Assists in operations scheduling and training.
- Supervises the operation of a facility and/or staff on a regular basis and in the absence of the supervisor.
- Informs and directs public in the use of City park facilities.
- Other duties as may be assigned.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
May oversee the work of non-supervisory employees. Carries out responsibilities in accordance with the City’s policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities may include training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work, addressing complaints and resolving problems.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.
Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of an acceptable equivalency diploma required. Minimum of three (3) years of experience as a Maintenance Worker with the Parks & Recreation Department required. Possession of Valid Florida Class “A” Commercial Driver’s License with tanker endorsement and maintenance of clean driving record required. Aerial work platform certification, forklift operator certification, and Green Industries Best Management Practices certification is highly preferred. A comparable amount of training, education, or experience may be substituted for the minimum qualifications.
- Knowledge of landscape maintenance, turf installation, and irrigation systems.
- Knowledge of tools and equipment required to perform duties.
- Knowledge of groundskeeping practices and principles.
- Knowledge of ornamental plant and tree maintenance.
- Knowledge of facilities and operations.
- Ability to inspect, operate, and maintain gasoline powered tools such as hedge trimmers, augers, string line trimmers, edgers, backpack blowers, and tree pruners.
- Ability to operate equipment required to perform duties, including but not limited to, bobcat machine with assorted attachments, chainsaw, stump grinder, Sand Pro field conditioner, commercial woodchipper, various size tractors with assorted attachments including bush hog, box blade, tiller, and flail units.
- Ability to operate various size riding mowers including skid steer mowers and tractors.
- Ability to operate and safely maneuver vehicles towing duel axel and tri-axel equipment transport trailers.
- Ability to inspect, repair, and maintain various playground structures and equipment.
- Ability to construct forms, mix, and pour concrete.
- Skill in the operation and preventive maintenance of equipment and related tools.
- Ability to operate equipment required to perform duties.

While performing the duties of this Job, the employee is regularly required to sit, talk, hear, and use hands to finger, handle, or feel. The employee is frequently required to walk and reach with hands and arms. The employee is occasionally required to stand and stoop, kneel, and crouch. . The employee is frequently required to lift and/or move up to 25 pounds, occasionally required to lift and/or move up to 80 pounds, and climb a ladder up to 15 feet in height. The employee is frequently required to prune large trees up to 40 feet in height and fell dead trees up to 60 feet in height. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision and ability to adjust focus. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to outside weather conditions that may be adverse and extreme (heat, humidity, cold, rain, etc.). The employee is frequently exposed to noise, dust, fumes, airborne particles, uneven surfaces, heights, and stressful situations. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to loud.
