Crisis Intervention Coordinator

The University of Virginia is seeking a Crisis Intervention Coordinator for the Department of Safety and Security/University of Virginia Police Department. This position serves as CIT Coordinator for the Department of Safety and Security/ University of Virginia Police Department and is responsible for providing and arranging support, training, and communication in order to promote improved collaboration, efficacy and accountability to community partners regarding crisis intervention team trainings and initiatives. This will include the planning and future instatement of a Crisis Co-Response model with appropriate University, Law enforcement and community resources involved to effectively aid in addressing mental crisis and ongoing quality of life social issues within the University and it’s local community. The CIT coordinator will work closely with the UPD Police Sergeant assigned to the Behavioral Health Unit and assist with potential case or individual patient follow up for community services support, on an as needed basis The incumbent will work collaboratively with other stakeholders to assure tenets of CIT are met, and nurture steering committee and community support for these endeavors.

Work is performed under general supervision and is guided by Virginia CIT guidelines, University of Virginia policies and procedures, quality assurance, emergency mental health and diagnostic guidelines and professional practices, and including ethical standards related to client interactions, judicial directives, law enforcement policies and procedures, state and federal licensure and accreditation regulations and guidelines they are expected to perform duties as specified, and in conjunction and alignment with, the policies and procedures listed in the above stated areas, as well as those of the Virginia Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Services (DBHDS).

Key Responsibilities :

  • Work in collaboration with the UVA Medical Centers Secured Behavioral Health Unit Police Sergeant to assure adequate follow up and monitoring of patients in need of treatment or additional social services upon their discharge from care.
  • Collaborate regularly with the Police Sergeant, the University Police Departments Medical Center Safety and Support Unit, Medical Center Security, Medical Center Staff, Region 10 and participating law enforcement jurisdictions to ensure the regions Crises Intervention Custody Exchange Program operates effectively.
  • Work in collaboration with University Police, local Law Enforcement agencies, University Counseling and Psychological Services (C.A.P.S) and other Community stakeholders to assist in the formation of a Crisis Response Co-responder model for the University Grounds and surrounding local community.
  • Respond to, and assists in solving, potential quality of life/social/ behavioral health issues to include instances of homelessness and substances abuse within the University Grounds, Medical Center and outlying concurrent jurisdiction area, contacting and utilizing community resources to achieve this goal.
  • Assist UVA’s Threat Assessment Team’s (TAT) with follow up on cases on an as needed basis.
  • Assist in triggering behavioral health citizen requests, calls, emails, and referrals to services in the community, Region 10, Medical Center and University network.
  • Plan, prepare and provide a 40-hour CIT curriculum (updated annually) and coordinate CIT training and certification for all UPD Police and Security Officers.
  • Assist with special projects: public education, expos, conferences, trainings, etc
  • Participate in state, county, and federal planning forums dealing with CIT policy formation, service design, managed care implementation, etc

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in social work, psychology, criminal justice or other social service-related field and at least 2 years of related work experience within the public behavioral health or criminal justice system.
  • Knowledge of laws and legal procedures relating to the emergency mental health system to include k nowledge and familiarity with VA State Emergency Custody Order/ Temporary Detention Order issuance and process.
  • Familiarity with Issues affecting those with MH, SUD, DD/ID disorders
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills and demonstrated ability to represent and promote the program within the agency and the community
  • Ability to develop, prepare, and present training and educational materials
  • Demonstrated ability to prepare and maintain detailed records and prepare related reports

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of local treatment providers and other agencies in service to the community.
  • Knowledge of grant administration.

Anticipated hiring range : $65,000- 89,000 / annual
