Established in 1980 by the Airport Commission, SFO Museum’s mission is to delight, engage, and inspire a global audience with programming on a broad range of subjects; to collect, preserve, interpret, and share the history of commercial aviation; and to enrich the public experience at San Francisco International Airport. The Museum has been accredited by the American Alliance of Museums since 1999 and retains the distinction of being the only accredited museum in an airport. The Museum operates more than twenty-five sites throughout the Airport terminals, including fourteen galleries that exhibit a rotating schedule of art, history, photography, science, and cultural exhibitions. Among the sites is the San Francisco Airport Commission Aviation Library and Louis A. Turpen Aviation Museum, which houses a permanent collection of more than 150,000 objects related to the history of commercial aviation. Job Description
Working within the Museum’s administrative team, the 3544 Curator III, Curator of Museum Affairs, supports colleagues in a wide variety of activities inclusive of exhibition scheduling and task management; general museum administration; budget and accounting procedures; hiring documentation; and social media oversight. The position reports to the Assistant Director, Museum Affairs, and has one direct report. The position works with all levels of Museum and Airport staff and has regular communication with outside individuals and organizations.
The essential functions of this classification include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Create and maintain all exhibition and special project timelines in Smartsheet; communicate key dates to Staff; meet regularly with Assistant Director, Exhibitions, and Director and Chief Curator to manage the advance three-year exhibition calendar; call monthly exhibition planning meetings;
- Develop, carry out, and explain administrative methods, policies, and procedures including Museum-specific policies and procedures, Building 674 administration, and ecological sustainability; and facilitate Museum-wide communication;
- Assist in the planning, preparation, implementation, and oversight of the Museum’s budget;
- In partnership with Museum administrative staff, record and reconcile department purchase orders and expenses; provide purchasing and vendor recommendations and guidance to Museum staff based on knowledge of exhibitions and collections activities; maintain accounting files; liaise with Accounting departments to ensure compliance of Museum vendors and Staff; maintain relationships with vendors and service providers;
- In partnership with Museum administrative staff, prepare documentation for personnel actions and functions; liaise as-needed with Airport’s Human Resources department;
- In partnership with Museum administrative staff, prepare contracts, documents, and Commission packages; liaise as-needed with Deputy City Attorneys;
- Supervise the Associate Curator of Public Engagement: review and edit social media posts; research collections and exhibitions; facilitate opportunities for enhanced educational opportunities;
- Identify opportunities within exhibitions, the aviation collection, and/or the public art collection for educational programs;
- Facilitate activities and communication with the American Alliance of Museums, with particular attention given to items pertinent to maintaining accredited status;
- Assist the Director and Chief Curator with the creation and distribution of minutes of quarterly Collections Review Committee and Advisory Board meetings; facilitate regular all-staff meetings;
- Review and edit exhibition text, brochures, and blog posts;
- Stays informed of new developments and initiatives throughout the museum sector;
- Other duties, as assigned.
Qualifications
Education:
Possession of a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in the fine arts, art history, decorative arts, design, history, library science, museum studies, natural history, science, technology, or other closely related disciplines.
Experience:
Five (5) years of museum experience.

One year full-time employment is equivalent to 2,000 hours (2,000 hours of qualifying work experience is based on a 40 hour work week). Any overtime hours that you work above 40 hours per week are not included in the calculation to determine full-time employment.

- Proficiency in Smartsheet, Claris Filemaker, and Microsoft Office Suite
- Knowledge of general museum policies and procedures
- Experience with budgeting and invoice processing
- Ability to communicate clearly verbally and in writing
- Ability and demeanor suited for a fast-paced, detail-oriented work environment

Selection Procedures:
The selection process will include evaluation of applications in relation to minimum requirements. Applicants meeting the minimum qualifications are not guaranteed advancement to the interview. If this becomes necessary, only those applicants whose qualifications most closely meet the needs of the Department will be invited for an interview.

Transportation Security Administration (TSA) Security Clearance:
Candidates for employment with the San Francisco Airport Commission are required to undergo a criminal history record check, including FBI fingerprints, and Security Threat Assessment in order to determine eligibility for security clearance and may be required to undergo drug/alcohol screening. Per Civil Service Commission Rule Section 110.9.1, every applicant for an examination must possess and maintain the qualifications required by law and by the examination announcement for the examination. Failure to obtain and maintain security clearance may be basis for termination from employment with the Airport Commission.
