Curatorial/Museum Assistant

Job Description

The ASU Art Museum seeks a qualified candidate for the position of Assistant Registrar (Curatorial/Museum Specialist) to assist with overseeing all activities relating to the care and management of a 12,000 object permanent art collection. She/he will be responsible for applying policies and procedures encompassing collections care, risk management, incoming/outgoing loans, accessions/deaccessions, storage, packing, security of art work in the Museum and during transit, and fine art insurance. The Assistant Registrar will report to the Registrar and assist with supervising student workers and interns.

Working Environment

  • Activities are performed in an environmentally controlled office setting subject to extended periods of sitting, keyboarding, and manipulating a computer mouse; required to stand for varying lengths of time and walk moderate distances to perform work.
  • Frequent bending, reaching, lifting, pushing and pulling up to 25 pounds.
  • Regular activities require ability to quickly change priorities which may include and/or are subject to resolution of conflicts.
  • Ability to clearly communicate to perform essential functions

Minimum Qualifications

Two years of general museum activities experience; OR, Any equivalent combination of experience and/or education from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved.

Flexible work options

  • Experience with museum collection management database software, specifically The Museum System (TMS).
  • Demonstrated knowledge of operating a PC Computer.
  • Experience in handling multiple tasks and meet deadlines.
  • Experience working in a team environment; strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of photographic collection documentation procedures and experience using a DSLR and lighting equipment.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of art history.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and skill in cataloging, accessioning and preserving museum collections.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and skill in museum exhibit development.
  • Experience in research methods.
  • Evidence of effective communication

Essential Duties

  • Assists in museum collection management
  • Assists with planning and production of museum exhibits and preservation of the collection.
  • Catalogue, preserve, store and evaluate museum objects according to museum standards.
  • Research database of collection pieces, retrieve relevant information and prepare research documentation in response to requests from curators, staff or museum patrons.
  • Processes new accessions into the museum’s permanent collection.
  • Design and/or consult with technical personnel regarding database changes, development or enhancement for file management and retrieval.
  • Maintain computerized management system regarding all information on collection pieces and loans; update information as required.
  • Independently identify collection conservation problems including poor storage materials, problems with objects, insect infestations and dirt/dust problems, and alert Museum conservator as needed.
  • Lead and instruct students and graduate assistants in preservation, cataloging and storage of museum objects.
  • Maintain supply inventory; orders or purchases supplies according to established department procedure
