Purpose Statement
The job of Custodian III is done for the purpose/s of maintaining an attractive, sanitary and safe facility for
students, staff and public; supervising the provision of equipment and furniture arrangements for meetings,
classroom activities and events, and trains others as needed.
Functions
Assigned to work with maintenance crew when school is not in session for the purpose of maximizing
the efficiency of the work force and meeting shift requirements.
Directs the setting up of tables and chairs or other equipment for special events for the purpose of
ensuring the availability of facilities and/or equipment.
Monitors attendance and services of custodians for the purpose of completing projects/work orders
efficiently and ensuring adequate coverage of custodial operations.
Provide custodial support and assist the plant foreman in directing the operation of the facility during
the evening shift for the purpose of ensuring that work is completed to provide a clean, secure and
operational facility.
Reports safety hazards and needed repairs to plant foreman for the purpose of ensuring that items are
repaired in a safe operating condition.
Secures the building site at the end of shift for the purpose of minimizing property damage, loss and/or
liability and ensuring safety at work site.
Supervises and cleans classrooms, cafeterias, hallways, restrooms, offices, special area rooms, locker
rooms, sidewalks and other areas of the assigned site as appropriate for the purpose of ensuring the
maintenance of a clean, safe and attractive environment.
Sweeps, dusts, vacuums, scrubs, waxes and polishes floors using a variety of floor care products and
machines for the purpose of maintaining a sanitary, clean and attractive facility.
Trains other custodians in their duties as needed for the purpose of developing professional trade and
safety awareness skills.

Skills, Knowledge and Abilities
SKILLS are required to perform single, non-technical tasks with a need to occasionally upgrade skills in
order to meet changing job conditions. Specific skills required to satisfactorily perform the functions of
the job include: adhering to safety practices.
KNOWLEDGE is required to read and follow instructions; and understand multi-step written and oral
instructions. Specific knowledge required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job includes:
basic knowledge of cleaning procedures.
ABILITY is required to schedule activities, meetings, and/or events; gather and/or collate data; and
consider a variety of factors when using equipment. Flexibility is required to work with others in a wide
variety of circumstances; work with data utilizing specific, defined processes; and operate equipment
using a variety of processes. Ability is also required to work with a wide diversity of individuals; work
with specific, job-related data; and utilize a variety of types of job-related equipment. In working with
others, problem solving is required to analyze issues and create action plans. Problem solving with
data may require independent interpretation; and problem solving with equipment is significant.
Specific abilities required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: proper use of
job-related equipment.
Responsibility
Responsibilities include: working under direct supervision using standardized procedures; directing
other persons within a small work unit; and operating within a defined budget. Utilization of some
resources from other work units is often required to perform the job’s functions. There is some
opportunity to effect the Organization’s services.
Working Environment
The usual and customary methods of performing the job’s functions require the following physical
demands: significant lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling; frequent climbing and balancing;
significant stooping, kneeling, crouching, and/or crawling; and significant fine finger dexterity.
Generally the job requires 5% sitting, 20% walking, and 75% standing. The job is performed under
some temperature extremes and in varying atmospheric conditions.
