Role and Responsibilities
The Level 1 Cybersecurity Engineer executes assigned work orders, including support tickets and project tasks to meet Managed Security Services Provider (MSSP), compliance, and other contractually defined obligations for new and existing customer facilities. This role will perform routine and scheduled evidence collection and review, security hardening, vulnerability remediation, and event monitoring and response. Candidates must possess an understanding of and direct experience with concepts and best practices related to IT/OT systems and cyber security.

MSP tasks
- Maintain consistent operation of multi-user systems, including coordination with network, SCADA and system engineers, field technicians, project managers, end users, and customer and IT management.
- Interact with our portfolio of remote networks and systems to perform various functions such as installations, upgrade/patch, monitoring, problem resolution, and configuration management.
- Engage with internal and external parties (e.g., ISPs, vendors) to troubleshoot and resolve issues, escalating as necessary to ensure timely resolution.
- Monitor and execute backups and other recovery preparedness tasks.
- Perform design, implementation, and administration activities for complex power generation computing environments on systems (Windows servers & workstations), networks and security (Hirschmann, Palo-Alto, Cisco), communication (ISP services), storage (SQL, historian), substation hardware (SEL), and power (UPS, PDU).
- Evaluate host, system, and network configurations for newly acquired sites and make recommendations for improvements.
- Peer review change tickets.
MSSP tasks
- Evaluate tickets for security risk and response.
- Monitor termination and reassignment notices and action accounts appropriately.
- Evaluate and update role and account-based access control lists to support “least privilege” concepts.
- Evaluate and update hardware and software-based network access control lists to support “least privilege” concepts.
- Execute vulnerability assessments using vulnerability scanning software.
- Monitor security and operational metrics.
- Review and respond to security and operational metrics.
- Execute mitigation plans for vulnerabilities.
- Review security, antivirus, traffic, and event logs.
- Adhere to cybersecurity and information security procedures, guidelines, and policies.
- Read and apply regulatory standards and IT frameworks.
- Submit redline requests for cybersecurity and information security documents.
- Participate in incident response.
- Review client and partner compliance evidence submission and perform QA checks
Consulting tasks
- Contribute to evaluation of vendor products, services, and suggestions.
- Contribute to evaluation of customer policies, guidelines, and procedures.
- Contribute to project planning and estimates.
Other
- Report project status for all recurring and non-recurring efforts as required.
- Attend staff and client meetings as required.
- Availability for 24-hour on-call duty to meet customer requirements.
- Availability to make occasional, planned shifts in work hours to accommodate efforts which can only be performed after generation hours.
- Develop and document technical processes and procedures as needed.
- Ensure that required tasks are completed or directed to others as necessary.
- Effective written and oral communication at all organizational levels with peers, end-users, and external customers.
- Analyze known and ad-hoc requirements to determine efficient schedule, workflow, and process to complete.
- Execute SOPs.
- Implement system hardening guides.
Preferred Experience
- Candidates with experience in NERC CIP-regulated environments are strongly preferred.
- Experience in compliance programs or standard-driven environments (e.g., PCI-DSS, NIST, ISO-27001)
- SOC, NOC, or other operation center experience
- Work experience with SCADA and SCADA Historian design, deployment, or maintenance
- Work experience with power generation, especially renewable energy
Required Qualification & Education
- Technical degree or minimum 3 years of relevant IT/OT professional experience
- Direct or indirect end-user service experience and/or experience providing remote support.
- Ability to read network and cabling drawings.
- All applicants must have prior professional IT/OT systems management experience and knowledge at least half of the following fields:
- Server hardware and OS management
- Networking and infrastructure design, implementation, and management
- Cybersecurity practices and principles
- Remote infrastructure and network support
- Disaster recovery and business continuity
- Work experience in at least one of the following focus areas is required:
- Tier 1 or OT help desk support
- IT infrastructure design or support
- Computer network design or support
- Host hardening or security monitoring (Cybersecurity)
