Description
The Central Transportation Planning Staff of the Boston Region Metropolitan Planning Organization seeks part-time data collectors. These are on-call positions that depend upon project needs.
Responsibilities
Data collection assignments vary and include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Counting passengers as they board and/or depart from MBTA buses, commuter rail trains, or subway cars
  • Counting people walking and/or biking
  • Gathering information on motor vehicle or bicycle parking
  • Conducting surveys
  • Other agency data collection needs as they arise

Assignments generally range from three to five hours and some include early morning or late evening times during all hours that the MBTA operates. Multiple assignments are usually available each week.
Qualifications
While the following sections describe required and desirable qualifications, candidates who believe that their particular experience and skills fulfill the requirements are encouraged to apply.

Required:

  • Competency in following assignment instructions
  • Attention to detail
  • Reliably able to arrive on time for assignments
  • Able to submit completed assignment work in a timely manner
  • Able to work independently in the field

Preferred:

  • The ability to take assignments that may range from 5:00 AM to midnight
  • The ability to take two or more assignments per week on a regular basis
  • Knowledge of the Greater Boston area and the MBTA system

Additional Information
Applicants must have access to a cell phone. A reliable automobile is useful for some assignments. (Mileage is reimbursed for any assignment that requires an automobile.) Data collectors have the flexibility to collect data either in paper format or on a tablet computer. Access to a computer printer is useful for those who prefer paper assignments.

The Central Transportation Planning Staff of the Boston Region Metropolitan Planning Organization is a public agency made up of a passionate group of transportation planners, analysts, modelers, programmers, and engineers working to address the Boston region’s transportation challenges. The agency’s deep transportation knowledge is an essential asset to the Massachusetts Department of Transportation, the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA), regional transit authorities, cities and towns within the region, as well as other agencies and stakeholders.
