Data Eng Mgr Infra Avail, Data Center Design Engineering – Availability Promise

AWS Infrastructure Operations (InfraOps) is a data driven organization. The InfraOps Availability team works with the hundreds of AWS data centers around the globe to deliver the highest quality and lowest cost physical security, availability, capacity, and scaling results for our customers. Our aim is to standardize operations globally by delivering tools, policy, processes and procedures to our internal teams. We measure the global performance of our data center infrastructure and develop reporting mechanisms to trend performance against our goals. Our team also manages numerous global programs which require automated reporting. In addition, the team serves as a resource for issue intake of engineering and operational challenges. We provide a platform for reviewing these global issues and facilitating remediation.

The InfraOps Availability team seeks an experienced and motivated Data Engineer Manager with outstanding data engineering skills and strong leadership ability. The successful candidate will be a self-starter, have strong qualitative and quantitative analytical skills and is comfortable working with business partners from concept to execution to iteration. This role requires in depth analysis of large data sets and building effective and efficient dimensional models and metrics focused on data design. The candidate will manage a team of Business Intelligence Engineers to influence the direction of the business by leveraging our data to deliver insights which drive decisions and action. The candidate will manage teams that build and maintain ETL dataflow jobs. In addition, the candidate will ensure code packages are maintained with updated policy and security requirements. The candidate will be responsible for infrastructure maintenance, maintaining server instances, our Redshift cluster, and web-portal. This will require being able to work with multiple database technologies and reporting platforms.

Additional responsibilities may include:
• Research machine learning algorithms and implement by tailoring to particular business needs and tested on large datasets.
• Work with multiple database technologies (Redshift, SQLServer, MySQL, Postgresql, etc.)
• Implement monitoring and alarming for internal processes
• Manage permissions and data vending to other partner teams
• Design metric tables and build effective data visualizations
• Provide analytical support to improve quality and standard work results
• Root cause research to identify data errors and process breakdowns and the associated solutions
• Foster culture of continuous engineering improvement through mentoring, feedback, and metrics

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS

– 2+ years of processing data with a massively parallel technology (such as Redshift, Teradata, Netezza, Spark or Hadoop based big data solution) experience

– 2+ years of relational database technology (such as Redshift, Oracle, MySQL or MS SQL) experience

– 2+ years of developing and operating large-scale data structures for business intelligence analytics (using ETL/ELT processes) experience

– 5+ years of data engineering experience

– Experience managing a data or BI team

– Experience communicating to senior management and customers verbally and in writing

– Experience leading and influencing the data or BI strategy of your team or organization

– Experience in at least one modern scripting or programming language, such as Python, Java, Scala, or NodeJS

– Experience hiring, developing and promoting engineering talent

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

– Experience with big data technologies such as: Hadoop, Hive, Spark, EMR

– Experience with AWS Tools and Technologies (Redshift, S3, EC2)

Our compensation reflects the cost of labor across several US geographic markets. The base pay for this position ranges from $136,000/year in our lowest geographic market up to $264,500/year in our highest geographic market. Pay is based on a number of factors including market location and may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. Amazon is a total compensation company.
