Role Summary

The role of the Data Governance Lead is to engage Foundational Business (FB) Leadership, Data Governance Officers, and FB Strategy Focus Areas, Business and Technology leaders to apply enterprise data governance solutions and capabilities to enable business and data strategy. Champion and facilitate the DX Committee effectiveness by actively engaging Data Governance Officers on agenda, decisions, and actions. Revitalize the Data Steward community by realigning key roles such as Customer & Product Data Stewards and revisiting and formalizing the accountability model. The role requires fundamental solid problem analysis and solving skills and practical communication skills. The success of the role requires partnering with Senior Business and Data Leaders, Data Architects/Modelers, Engineers/Wranglers, Data Owners/Stewards, B.I. Solution Developers and other business and technical roles.

Key Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with partners across lines of businesses and functions, navigating the organization and figuring out who is needed to get things done. You will use your influence skills to establish a strong sense of working together towards a shared vision and goals.
  • Foster the Data Governance Officers (DGO), Data Owners and Data Stewards community for the Foundational Business. Align key roles such as Customer and Product Data Stewards and define the accountability model for the Strategic Business.
  • Champion and facilitate the DX Committee effectiveness by actively engaging Data Governance Officers on agenda, decisions, and actions.
  • Engage business leaders/staff and technology leaders/staff in an end-to-end data management process to understand and communicate data management capabilities to support solutions.
  • Engage business leaders/staff and technology leaders/staff in establishing robust data controls for the data creation and update, and data entry and collection processes.
  • Support Data Quality Product Owner by establishing data quality processes for business-critical applications and data quality measures for critical data elements
  • Establish Data Quality Forum to review critical data quality issues and to drive root cause assessment and mitigation planning.
  • Study industry trends in data management and governance. Work closely with NYL Ventures team to evaluate new data management capabilities and perform proof of concepts that will enhance data strategy.
  • Apply problem-solving techniques to determine business impact and strategic options
  • Support the maintenance of the business case for the DX Program, including but not limited to defining multi-year costs (labor and non-labor) and hard and soft saves. Partner with Finance teams to measure the rate of return for the Data Governance Tools

  • Strong technical proficiency and demonstrated ability with data management technologies such as data quality profiling tools, data catalog, and master data management
  • Comfortable with “unknowns” and able to figure out what must get done with the information available
  • Ability to perform essential project management functions such as project plan development and resource/time estimation of tasks
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate, communicate, build relationships, mentor, and influence a community of data professionals across lines of business and functional areas
  • Strong written, verbal, and communication skills with the demonstrated ability to work with all levels within the organization
  • Ability to tell a story through presentations, to motivate and influence the adoption of new ideas and capabilities
  • Awareness of relevant and emerging financial services/insurance data standards is a plus
  • Familiarity with IT functions and services
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and manage multiple simultaneous priorities
  • Ability to think end-to-end, connect moving parts, and anticipate and manage change impacts
  • Ability to define and leverage metrics to drive performance and outcomes
  • Demonstrated knowledge of configuring and administering data catalogs, data glossaries, and data quality solutions is a plus
  • Working knowledge of MS Word, Excel, Vision, and PowerPoint
  • Experience with visualization tools like Tableau is desirable
  • Working knowledge of current and future information management technologies, trends, and applications

Previous Experience

  • 10+ years of relevant experience in the data management and governance domain
  • 5+ years of relevant experience in defining and executing data governance policies and standards
  • Experience in
    • Data Governance Solutions and Capabilities
    • Solving problems of various low to high complexity
    • Developing insights from the analysis of data
    • Making and delivering presentations to business and technical staff
    • Supporting change and managing transitions are highly desirable
    • The Insurance industry is highly desirable

Education/Training

Required:

  • Bachelor’s degree; equivalent work experience accepted

Preferred:

  • MBA or Master’s in Management of Technology; equivalent work experience accepted

Salary range: $90,000-$135,000

Overtime eligible: Exempt

Discretionary bonus eligible: Yes

Sales bonus eligible: No
