This position serves as a Night Shift Supervisor in the Department of Employment Security’s Support Services section. In this role you will be responsible for overseeing data processing operations and supervising a team of data processing specialists. In addition, you will confer and work collaboratively with other sections and staff to ensure completion of the section’s work assignments.

Job Responsibilities

30% Under direction, serves as the Night Shift Supervisor for Support Services Team A for the Department of Innovation & Technology (DoIT) supporting the Illinois Department of Employment Security (IDES):

  • Supervises data processing staff responsible for completing batch transaction processing schedules which update mainframe databases, producing correspondence and creating management/statistical reports for the Benefits, Revenue and Administrative systems
  • Develops and monitors processing schedules to ensure timely and accurate batch transaction processing
  • Oversees night shift processing, production control and computer operations through the operation of remote stations and all peripheral hardware
  • Monitors system performance to maintain maximum performance of all mainframe and personal computer (PC) based equipment

20% Controls, processes, and monitors all data processing input and output materials in relation to priority, quality, and quantity:

  • Reviews, approves and releases finished product to Input/Output Control for distribution to users

15% Confers and interfaces with Central Computer Facility (CCF) in Springfield including Command Center Network Control (CCNC) and (CTOC) units:

  • Collaborates on problems and ideas to develop solutions for more efficient workflow.
  • Provides technical advice and guidance to personnel requiring technical expertise.

15% Works collaboratively with Production Support, General Services/Mail Services and all users utilizing Support Services operations:

  • Conducts testing in job completion for problem resolution.
  • Interfaces with other work shift supervisors to set workable schedules ensuring completion of all workloads

10% Serves as full-line supervisor:

  • Assigns and reviews work
  • Provides guidance and training to assigned staff
  • Counsels staff regarding work performance
  • Reassigns staff to meet day-to-day operating needs
  • Establishes annual goals and objectives
  • Approves time off
  • Adjusts first level grievances
  • Effectively recommends and imposes discipline up to and including discharge
  • Prepares and signs performance evaluations
  • Determines and recommends staffing needs

5% Prepares manuals, reports and other materials needed for equipment operations, utilizing varied computer technologies associated with diverse sophisticated mainframe and PC based systems.

5% Performs other duties as assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the duties enumerated above.

Minimum Qualifications

1. Requires knowledge, skill, and mental development equivalent to completion of high school in computer science, management information systems or data processing.
2. Requires four (4) years of data processing experience.

Preferred Qualification (In Order of Significance)

1. Three (3) years of developing and monitoring processing schedules to ensure timely and accurate batch transaction processing.
2. Three (3) years of experience supervising data processing staff.
3. Three (3) years of experience overseeing processing, production control and computer operations through the operation of remote stations and all peripheral hardware.
4. Extensive knowledge of data processing methods and procedures.
5. Extensive knowledge of peripheral computer equipment and data input operations.
6. Ability to analyze problems and adopt an effective course of action.
7. Ability to develop and maintain cooperative working relationships.
8. Demonstrated verbal and written communication skills.

5. Requires ability to use agency-supplied equipment (cell phone, laptop, etc.).
6. Requires ability to attend seminars, conferences, and trainings to stay current on methods, tools, ideologies, or other industry related topics relevant to the job duties.
7. This position is considered light work as defined by the U.S. Department of Labor (20 CFR 404.1567(b)). Light work involves lifting no more than 20 pounds at a time with frequent lifting or carrying of objects weighing up to 10 pounds.
