Data Science Specialist

Job Description

ASU Library is recruiting a Data Science specialist to join the Unit for Data Science and Analytics within the Engagement and Learning Services Directorate, and who will report to the unit Head. The Data Science specialist will play a unique and pivotal role in student, faculty, and staffs’ understanding of current data science concepts and topics, methodologies, and tools through mentorship, projects, webinars, and workshops. They will collaborate with other team members, along with internal stakeholders across the library and university, and potentially with external stakeholders, to develop a program of engagement, outreach, and support for the ASU community; and to contribute to the advancement of data literacy and research.

Working Environment

  • Activities are performed in an environmentally controlled office setting subject to extended periods of sitting and/or standing.
  • Exposure to dust and other airborne materials.
  • Utilize computer, phone, and various technologies (Google Workspace, Microsoft Office Suite, Slack, Zoom, etc.), office equipment (copier, printer, scanner, etc.).
  • May oversee various projects within the library involving handling, sorting, shelving or relocation of physical materials.
  • Responsible for oversight of building security, maintenance issues, and compliance with university policy in absence of direct supervisor.
  • May work alternate hours, including nights and/or weekends, as needed.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in Statistics, Computer Information Systems, Business Information, Economics or a related field and three (3) years of related data analysis experience, OR, any equivalent combination of experience and/or education from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved.

Desired Qualifications

  • Evidence of a Master’s Degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Math, Statistics, Industrial Engineering, or related field.
  • Experience in statistics and data science concepts, methodologies, tools, and current trends (i.e. Python, R, SQL SPSS, machine learning, and data visualization).
  • Evidence of effective communication and presentation skills; with the ability to convey complex technical concepts to diverse audiences of all levels and academic disciplines.
  • Evidence of effective communication skills; able to make presentations to faculty, staff, researchers, and leadership.
  • Experience hosting and or facilitating workshops and or webinars.
  • Experience with programming best-practices, including test-drive development and design patterns.
  • Evidence of working in a GitHub repository and or publications.
  • Experience with Open Source software.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of information organization and retrieval technologies used to organize, store, and access digital content.
  • Ability to work independently, manage and prioritize tasks and projects simultaneously; inform of emerging trends and technologies in data science; and collaborate effectively in a team environment.

Essential Duties

  • Plan, develop, and deliver engaging workshops and webinars on various data science topics, tailored to all levels and academic disciplines.
  • Research and collaborate with experts to ensure current and accurate content that meets the needs of the ASU community.
  • Create and use various pedagogical approaches and real-world examples to enhance student, faculty, and staffs’ understanding of data science concepts, topics, and applications.
  • Collaborate with librarians and academic professionals/departments to develop data science-related materials.
  • Design, develop, implement, test, and document research projects pertaining to statistics, machine learning, text analysis, data analysis, automated classification, and various modeling techniques; and document approaches to data driven research problems.
  • Provide individual and or group consultations with students, faculty and staff on data science related questions, projects, and research efforts.
  • Promote an inclusive and welcome environment for everyone seeking assistance from the unit and library.
