Who We Are
Priority Consideration Date: November 12, 2023
Located in the scenic Puget Sound area with Mount Rainier in the distance, Tacoma is the third largest city in Washington State with a thriving and diverse community of over 200,000 residents. Tacoma Community College (TCC) was built on the ancestral territory of Coast Salish peoples, specifically the Puyallup and Squaxin Island Tribes. The 1854 Medicine Creek Treaty forcibly removed them to Reservations to make way for colonizers; we recognize the privilege of utilizing this land has come at great cost. We honor the resilience of the Puyallup and Squaxin Island people, who still live here, defend their rights, and contribute greatly to the well-being of our community. Our institution aims to increase partnerships and community ties with the local indigenous populations. Moreover, TCC stands in solidarity with Black Lives Matter and the Black community by further strengthening collaboration with the Black Student Union as well as community entities such as the Tacoma-Pierce County Black Collective, the Tacoma Urban League, and local black-owned businesses. In addition, we strongly support the Stop Asian Hate movement and have an active Asian Pacific Islander Student Club as well as an Asian and Pacific Islander Faculty and Staff Coalition. We continually strive to become an anti-racist institution.
The Science, Engineering, and Mathematics (SEM) Division is home to instruction in Astronomy, Biology, Botany, Chemistry, Computer Science, Earth Sciences, Engineering, Environmental Science, Mathematics, and Physics. The SEM Division supports students who are pursuing Associate degrees in STEM fields who intend to continue their education at the Baccalaureate level and beyond, students who are pursuing Allied Health or other professional/technical degrees, and students who are pursuing degrees in the liberal arts. The Dean oversees the MESA program, which empowers underrepresented students by providing them a community that supports their pathways to higher education in STEM, through mentorships, academic programs, and interactive workshops. The Dean also provides academic leadership in supporting Associate of Arts and Associate of Science degree specializations, the Sustainability Distinction Pathway, college-wide Learning Communities, and other faculty priorities.
The division has three departments and approx. 90 faculty (50/50 part-time/full-time) and 15 staff members. The division is housed almost entirely in a three-story building containing offices, classrooms, labs, study spaces, a greenhouse, and a tank of happy Blue Gills. The TCC Sustainability Garden is also overseen by the Division, serving as a classroom and a source of fresh produce for the on-campus Food Pantry.
Among the courses the division offers are Organic Chemistry, The Solar System, Human Cadaver Prosection, and Engineering Thermodynamics. The Math curriculum allows all students to enter college-level math with co-requisite support if needed, and allows advanced students to take multivariate calculus, linear algebra, and differential equations. The SEM Division is committed to the use of educational technology and instrumentation, utilizing state-of-the-art microscopes, IR and NMR instrumentation, and an Anatomage table, to name a few. TCC is committed to developing more culturally responsive curricula by infusing and incorporating more educational content focused on the lives, experiences, and contributions of Native, Black, Asian, Latina/o/x, LGBTQ2IA+, and other marginalized communities, and to broadly to develop more culturally responsive curricula. We encourage applications from members of those groups, those with experience with research and/or engagement in local or indigenous communities, and those with lived experience.
