Department Communications Manager

The Department of Anesthesiology, Perioperative and Pain Medicine, at Stanford University’s School of Medicine, is seeking a Department Communications Manager to lead the design, creation, development, and execution of its communications strategies. Reporting to faculty leadership, and the Vice Chair for Finance and Administration, you will build this new communications unit function from the ground up, coordinating efforts with the Faculty Communications Council, as well as front line Anesthesia staff. Key responsibilities include, development and execution of a department communications strategic plan, coordination of internal/external electronic communications, including web technologies, design, content management and social media platforms.

Core duties include*:

  • Develop strategic direction and oversee implementation of long- and short-term communication plans with direct impact to a unit or program.
  • Develop and lead social media strategies, that increase brand awareness, create buzz around promotional events, or launch new department campaigns. Including, what media platforms to use, what type of posts to create, when to post, and which audiences to target.
  • Website development, design, and content management.
  • Devise and implement creative, compelling, and effective means of communicating the innovations, academic excellence, and essential nature of a unit or program.
  • Provide leadership to achieve department communication goals supporting an individual unit’s communication strategy.
  • Responsible for hiring, training, supervision and retention of staff, career coaching, personal development for direct report and accountable for the performance of employees.
  • Support a unit’s crisis communication response including emergency matters.
  • Collaborate with institutional communicators to ensure individual unit’s strategic plans and activities are aligned with overall university outreach, communication and media relations content and other areas.

  • Understanding of branding and positioning strategies.

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE (REQUIRED):

Bachelor’s degree and eight years of relevant experience or combination of education and relevant experience.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS*:

  • Constantly perform desk-based computer tasks.
  • Frequently stand/walk, sit, use a telephone, grasp lightly/fine manipulation, speaking.

The expected pay range for this position is $128,000 to $160,000 per annum.

Stanford University provides pay ranges representing its good faith estimate of what the university reasonably expects to pay for a position. The pay offered to a selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal equity, geographic location, and external market pay for comparable jobs.
