Description
Deputy Chief of Staff (WMS Band 4)
Office of the Chief of Staff
Tumwater, Washington (Flexible/Hybrid)
DOH7417
Our ideal candidate
When we talk to our Deputy Chief of Staff about their values, they’ll see themselves in words like Human-Centered, Partnership, Equity, and Excellence. They’ll also see in these words a challenge to improve-personally and organizationally-in pursuit of more positive impact on people and better business outcomes.
When we ask others about our Deputy Chief of Staff, they’ll describe a trust-builder, and person of remarkable capability, diligence, and focus. They’ll tell us about someone who seeks to understand the people they impact, and actively adjusts their approaches/behaviors to improve their impact and others’ success. They ask the question, “What will I do to help this go right?” often.
It takes personal courage, tenacity, and humility to achieve big things in this way. Our ideal candidate wants to take on this role because they’re hungry for personal growth and eager to lead the businesses, teams, and workplace culture at the Department of Health.
Join a Great Team, Make a difference
Reporting to the DOH Chief of Staff, the Deputy Chief of Staff is an executive, senior leadership position responsible for enhancing and supporting the agency-wide services within the Office of the Chief of Staff (OCOS): Financial Services (FS), People Services (PS), and Center for Facilities, Risk, and Adjudication (CFRA).
The role serves as a close partner to the Chief of Staff and fulfills crucial roles with several teams at the heart of the organization. The Deputy is responsible to:
- Help lead the agency services within the Office (i.e., FS, PS, CFRA), including a small team dedicated to helping all those businesses thrive.
- Lead, support, and facilitate the Agency-wide Deputies team, a group with immense impact on the entire agency, its work, and its people.
- Design and facilitate the Chief of Staff Open Door forum which brings together the agency’s most-senior leaders for communication, connection, and trust-building.
We expect our Deputy Chief of Staff to do their work in a particular way:
- A leader who actively sees others, seeking to understand their objectives and challenges; adjusts efforts to help others achieve their objectives; and understands their own impact on others.
- A leader who shares power, working to achieve systemic equity by leading and sustaining a relational culture rooted in trust. We desire a colleague who questions what is and facilitates solutions for what can be with others rather than for them.
- A courageous champion of equity and anti-racism to advance belonging and justice in the OCOS and its businesses, and in the Department of Health.
- A catalyst for system and policy change, expecting, encouraging, and facilitating OCOS leaders/businesses to understand and apply equity in all aspects of their decision-making.
We hope the high impact of this role, along the way we expect our Deputy to lead, captures your imagination. The focus, values, and approaches described above mean this role isn’t for every leader. Our Deputy Chief of Staff is a facilitative leader rather than a “command and control” authority. In our Office, “facilitative leadership” means focus on helping others succeed through insightful counsel, thoughtful meeting design and facilitation, tough choices, insistent actions, and power sharing. In this way, our Deputy Chief of Staff facilitates the success of OCOS leaders, Agency Deputies, businesses, teams, and, through them, all DOH.
