General Description: This is an executive level, professional position. The incumbent performs difficult and complex tasks in overseeing the operation of multiple sections of the Planning Department
Organization: The Deputy Director of Planning reports to the Senior Director of Community Development and supervises several staff.
Essential Functions:
- Serves as a key member of the Planning team in determining policy issues, zoning interpretations, and subdivision questions
- Recommends and prepares ordinance amendments as directed
- Makes presentations to Planning Commission and Board of Supervisors
- May testify in court as expert in land development regulation practices
- Fulfills duties and functions of Sr. Director in the Sr Director’s absence
- Performs related tasks as assigned
Current Planning Deputy
- Supervises the Current Planning and Long-Range sections of the Planning Department
- Provide guidance on all rezoning, conditional use permits and public hearing items
- Supervise and direct long-range planning, including Comprehensive Plan and Small area Studies

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Must possess skills which exhibit extensive knowledge of, and exhibited proficiency in the field of local government planning including comprehensive planning, zoning, site plan review, and subdivision review. Must also be familiar with local government code compliance practices and procedures, particularly as they relate to zoning enforcement.
Must be able to demonstrate a significant commitment and ability to providing excellent customer service to the residents of Hanover County. In addition, excellent oral and written communication skills, effective supervisory skills, the ability to build productive relationships with County leadership, including county administration, department heads, senior leader pier groups, coworkers, subordinates, registered and licensed professionals, contractors, developers, and most importantly, the general public are all required skills. The position will also be expected to contribute professional recommendations and viewpoints of local governance beyond the immediate areas of responsibility.
Education, Experience and Training: Requires Bachelors’ Degree (Master’s degree preferred in the field of Urban and Regional Planning or Public Administration), be a member of, or qualify for membership in the American Institute of Certified Planners, have eight years of progressively responsible experience in the field of Urban and Regional Planning, and 3 years of supervisory experience, or possess equivalent education and experience which clearly demonstrates the ability to excel in the Deputy Director position.

- Work beyond normal work hours, requires attendance at some evening meetings and overtime as necessary to meet office deadlines
