Are you looking for a position that will enable you to give back to your community? The City of Wylie’s Police Department is seeking a Detention Officer to work in the newly opened jail. The selected applicant will book and release inmates, maintain prisoner care, distribute property and supplies, provide custodial services, restrain violent inmates, and operate detention facility equipment. Will interface with other City employees and citizens. Orientation period is a full 12 months.
Supervision is provided by the Detention Manager.
**Starting salary is based on years of experience. Requested salary on your application must be within the job posting’s salary range to be considered by the hiring manager.**
Essential Job Functions
- Positively identifies inmates using fingerprint technology. Audits fingerprint cards to ensure accurate information. Corrects any discrepancies.
- Books-in detainees; performs searching, fingerprinting, and photographing. Completes book-in information for detainees in the jail management system.
- May administer intoxilyzer tests and videotape persons arrested for Driving While Intoxicated (DWI).
- Performs care and custody of individuals detained in the Wylie City Jail, including checking detainees in their cells as required by policy, preparing meals for detainees, and dispensing physician directed medications.
- Visually, and through the use of video surveillance equipment, performs cell checks to monitor detainee status and behavior.
- Interacts with City court and Judge.
- Testifies in court as needed.
- Restrains violent inmates according to policy, preventing incident escalation and providing non-physical before physical responses to prisoner situations.
- Treats inmates humanely. Protects the constitutional rights of the inmates during their time in confinement.
- Explains bail and bond-out options to detainees charged with offenses; accepts bail, bonds, or fines and completes release forms for detainees.
- Operates a motor vehicle in carrying out the business of the department and the City.
- Performs as a responsible steward of the public trust and strives for excellence in public service, enhancing the quality of life for all.
- Acts in a civil, respectful manner at all times to management, co-workers and others.
- Performs other duties as may be assigned.
Minimum Job Requirements
- High School Diploma or equivalent.
- Must be at least 18 years of age and a United States citizen.
- Valid Class C Driver’s License. Must have Texas Driver’s License within 30 days of hire.
- TCOLE Basic Jailer license preferred, but not required at time of hire. Must successfully obtain TCOLE Basic Jailer license within 12 months of hire.
- Must successfully complete training in defensive tactics within 12 months of hire and maintain proficiency in defense tactics.
- Must obtain CPR Certification and maintain proficiency in CPR.
- Completion of National Incident Management System (NIMS) training courses as outlined by Emergency Management after hire.
