Summary of Position
We are seeking a DevOps Engineer to join our team within the Product Development business unit. This position will support courseware and lab development activities across the full spectrum of SANS courses. These activities include but are not limited to data set and content creation, virtualization infrastructure, and lab environment design/development/testing, virtual platform readiness, toolset development and integration, enterprise range development and build out, bootable software distribution creations and standardization. All activities contribute to the quality, depth technical engagement, and realism of SANS course content and the satisfaction of SANS
customers.
The candidate for this position needs to be a self-starter who enjoys multi-tasking and bringing many disparate technical tasks to completion simultaneously and on-time. They must engage in creative, high-level thinking, hands-on execution of technical tasks, maintain a self-starter and can-do attitude, and be willing to work as a team completing entire efforts without detailed oversight once a particular strategy has been set. This position requires a broad range of technical skills, including experience with courseware data set & content development, lab development, creating challenges, enterprise lab buildout, and the proven ability to execute technical efforts supporting multiple courses and curricula simultaneously.
Key Responsibilities
In order to achieve these goals, the DevOps Engineer works with SANS course authors to ascertain their technical requirements, identify how SROC resources can best support them, and engage with both to fulfill author requirements to the greatest extent possible. The areas in which this support may be provided include but are not limited to the following capacities:
- Cloud DevOps and scalability
- Data Set and Content Creation
- Virtual Platform Readiness, Toolset Development and Integration, etc.
- Virtualization Infrastructure and Lab Environment(s)
- Enterprise Range(s) Architect and Engineering
- Distribution Updates, Normalization, and Production Readiness
- Sales Engineering and Proposal Support
- Deliverable Review
- Classroom Setup Requirements and Technical Liaison (i.e. ensure success upon
delivery to students) - Planning, Architecture, and Implementation for NetWars and other CTF-style events
- Determine and define project scope and objectives
- Provide periodic project updates to stakeholders
- Utilize industry best practices, techniques, and standards throughout entire project
lifecycle - Monitor progress and make adjustments as needed
- Measure project performance to identify areas for improvement
- Identify and creatively solve problems in the best interests of stakeholders
- Performing additional duties as directed – within the timelines provided
- Other job duties as assigned.
Basic Qualifications
- Technical Bachelor’s degree or an equivalent combination of education and experience
- 2+ years experience with AWS
- 2+ years with Cloud Native Technologies and Languages
- 2+ years with Terraform or Equivalent Infrastructure as Code tooling
- Experience with Golang a plus
- Experience with various operating system infrastructure, including Windows, Windows
- Server, Windows Active Directory Architecture, Linux – CentOS, RedHat, and Ubuntu
- Experience with automation technologies, including Ansible, CloudFormation, Terraform, Pulumi, SaltStack, or similar plus adaptability to learn and use new or unfamiliar automation technologies
- Experience with virtualization technologies such as VMWare, Parallels or Virtualbox
- Experience with networking, including design, implementation, and
- Knowledge of security platforms and tools such as centralized logging, boundary defense, web application firewalls, system patching, role Based Access Control (RBAC), and vulnerability scanning
- Ability to work collaboratively on an integration and development team
- Ability to acclimate quickly to a rapidly changing environment
- Collaborative and cross-functional team member
- Hands-on execution along with aptitude for working with a team
- Creativity and out-of-the-box thinking
- Excellent analytical skills

Reporting Relationships
This position reports to the Director of SROC and has no direct reports.
Work Environment
This position is remote with the requirement to travel a few times a year to in person meetings.

The base salary range for this position is between $100-150k. Base salary ranges may vary by geographic location and relevant experience, education, certifications, and years of experience. There is no guarantee an offer will be at the top of the posted range based on the salary analysis.
