Department Description Department Purpose
Strategic Communications provides comprehensive and coordinated campus leadership in planning, creating and implementing integrated marketing and communications programs across all media that foster increased awareness, understanding and support of UC Davis’ mission, vision, accomplishments and needs among its many internal and external constituencies. It serves as the official voice of UC Davis to regional, state, national and international news media.
Strategic Communications encompasses six units: Visual Communications, News and Media Relations, Web Communications, Social Media, Marketing and Branding, and Executive Communications. Strategic Communications’ multimedia storytellers, designers, Web developers, information architects and search-engine experts have a mission to communicate university messages through interactive media. We coordinate these communications across platforms to reach our audiences. Our efforts could be seen on the UC Davis home site, Discord, Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter, TikTok, YouTube and other sites and channels.
Job Summary
Under the direction of the Director of Visual Communications, coordinate and produce complex multimedia projects as assigned. Collaborate with members of Strategic Communications including the news team, social media team, web team and marketing team, as well as other key campus partners. Plan and write scripts, or execute scripts written by others. Develop project briefs and storyboards. Create videos for digital distribution, including incorporating still and motion graphics, and edit still photos for print and digital. Mentor staff in creating multimedia stories and advise on strategic usage of multimedia on digital platforms for effective integrated marketing and communications. Lead video trainings for other communicators on campus. Use the Visual Communication’s video studio to produce content. Advise on equipment purchasing. Help manage the campus video archive. Keep current with video editing, photo editing and digital technologies and analytics tools. Serve as a backup photographer.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS
• Ability to see the full color spectrum of light and visually color-correct images with a high degree of accuracy.
• Sit at computer for extended periods of time.
• Lift objects up to 25 pounds, to include camera equipment, to various locations to conduct photographic shoots.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
- UC Davis is a smoke and tobacco free campus effective January 1, 2014. - Work occasional weekends, evenings, and during news events.
- Regular travel on and occasionally beyond the UC Davis campus.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor’s degree in related area and/or equivalent experience
- Significant demonstrated experience as a visual storyteller with experience in documentary style production with responsibility of bringing projects from concept to completion, including writing, shooting and editing projects.
- Experience creating video in a studio setting, including the use of live switchers, multi camera storytelling, and green screen video production. Experience using lighting equipment to create a variety of looks in challenging locations.
- Experience using multiple audio tools for sound capture, including wireless lav mics, boom mics, on-camera mics.
- Demonstrated experience in training others in video, photography and related editing technologies.
- Expert level post production skills using Adobe Premiere and After Effects to create compelling, story-driven motion graphics.
- Time management skills. Skills to handle multiple projects under strict deadlines. Skills to maintain a positive connection with the university community, guests, visitors and the general public
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
• Experience writing scripts for short form documentary-style video productions, industrials, and promo videos, all from a journalism point-of-view.
• Knowledge of the academic and research enterprises and skills in deciphering technical research information and findings, and in providing multimedia products that help communicate this information to the news media, campus community and University Communications’ specific audiences.
• Ability to work collaboratively with writers, editors, print and Web designers, and other key staff members to produce top quality content.
• Ability to organize and maintain multimedia and photography materials online.
