Position Summary Information
Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit
The Frank Hawkins Kenan Institute of Private Enterprise is the outreach arm of UNC’s Kenan-Flagler Business School. Founded in 1985 by visionary entrepreneur and philanthropist Frank Hawkins Kenan, the Institute is a research and strategic planning organization that focuses on three themes: entrepreneurship, multi-university research translation and economic development. The Institute’s mission is to be a partner for innovative entrepreneurship with a vision of elevating the state of North Carolina to be a global leader in innovation and entrepreneurship. The Office of Research Services and Knowledge Management, located within the Frank Hawkins Kenan Institute of Private Enterprise, is part of the flexible programmatic staff in the Institute. The staff supports the Institute in the areas of research and analysis (including leading the Patent Landscaping and Market Evaluation Service), data management and knowledge management to create best-in-class services and systems, supporting the Institute’s goals, equaling its reputation, and enriching the work of its faculty and staff. Expansion of projects and programs are being developed that require greater support and new expertise.
Position Summary
This position may be eligible for a hybrid work arrangement that may include a partially remote work location, consistent with System Office policy. UNC Chapel Hill employees are generally required to reside within a reasonable commuting distance of their assigned duty station.
The Digital Media Associate is responsible for planning, producing and editing custom written and visual content for social and other online media channels belonging to the Kenan Institute of Private Enterprise along with the organization’s website. Vitally, this position also drives SEO for the institute, ensuring content featuring key thought leaders from the institute and UNC Kenan-Flagler Business School are promoted to a global audience – and that the institute’s broader work and mission achieve increasingly broad impact. This role serves as both a content creator and editor, as well as a project manager for platform timelines and other content developed specifically for social and digital channels. An ideal candidate will be both data-driven and creative, with experience across digital marketing channels and an eye towards optimization and targeted messaging.
This person will also focus efforts on streamlining and raising the thought leadership profile of executives and academics affiliated with the institute. In this role, the Digital Media Associate is also responsible for creating and implementing a social media calendar as well as overseeing work-study students and interns. This position will strategically expand the Kenan Institute’s following by defining and implementing comprehensive strategies to increase brand visibility, engagement and traffic across all digital platforms, and serves as the de-facto voice of the organization online.
This position is part of the Kenan Institute of Private Enterprise’s external affairs team, is supervised by the director of external affairs and works closely and collaboratively across the entire team, especially producers of video and communications content. This position must also collaborate with organizational stakeholders and other communications units across UNC to align content, messaging and branding, as well as ensuring cross-promotion.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
Bachelor’s degree in a discipline related to the area of assignment; or equivalent combination of training and experience. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.
Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
This job requires excellent written communication skills, including grammatical expertise. Fluency working in multiple social media channels, including Twitter, Facebook, YouTube, LinkedIn and Instagram, as well as marketing and analytics platforms is required. A successful candidate will also have experience working in branded content on behalf of complex organizations, and will possess excellent organizational and time management skills.
