Precourt Institute for Energy

As part of the Stanford Doerr School of Sustainability, the Precourt Institute for Energy concentrates the talents of the University on energy research and education, from basic science and technology to policy and business. We disseminate research results and help the University develop energy-literate leaders as part of its educational mission. We work across campus in all seven of Stanford’s schools. We also build collaborations globally with industry, other research institutions, government, and civic organizations in pursuit of sustainable, affordable, secure energy for all people.

Understand Energy Program

Understand Energy is a Stanford course offered out of the Civil and Environmental Engineering department and a program in the Precourt Institute for Energy to educate students and the public about our energy systems to empower them to address climate change and sustainability issues, engage on equity and human development challenges, participate in energy industry markets and technology innovations, and make informed energy decisions. We currently serve >300 students annually with our fall/spring/summer course offerings at Stanford.

Seeking Digital Media Specialist, Understand Energy

The Precourt Institute for Energy is seeking exceptional candidates to serve as a Digital Media Specialist for its Understand Energy Program, working closely with and reporting directly to the Project Manager for Understand Energy, Sharon Poore.

We are looking for a full-time Digital Media Specialist with advanced technical experience using digital media equipment and editing software, knowledge of all aspects of professional video production, YouTube channel management experience, and excellent organizational and time-management skills, who would be excited to help us extend the reach of our Understand Energy program from 300 Stanford students annually to 2-3 million people across the globe.

The Digital Media Specialist will record, edit, and produce professional, high-quality videos for a website that provides the public with free access to highly curated Understand Energy course content. This role will work with the Project Manager, course lecturers, and other team members to evaluate and oversee the video content on the Understand Energy website and YouTube channel to ensure that it reflects current, relevant, and accurate educational content.

Your Responsibilities will include:

  • Producing professional, high-quality videos for the public-facing Stanford Understand Energy website.
  • Managing all aspects of capturing and recording content, including sound and lighting.
  • Providing high-quality post-production and editing to ensure a quality product and an accurate depiction of content. Editing will include the removal of all student voices and images, as well as the removal of any content specified by the teaching team or lecturer.
  • Partnering with internal and external course lecturers: articulating the production process and expectations; communicating best practices for quality recordings; verifying proper equipment set up; and providing status updates.
  • Managing the public-facing Stanford Understand Energy YouTube channel, including organization and maintenance of all video content, playlist creation, and analytics.
  • Posting and embedding new Understand Energy video content on the website and YouTube channel. Organizing, storing, naming, and archiving video masters and edited masters.
  • Working with the Project Manager to define YouTube Analytics reports that track relevant viewer and usage statistics for the Understand Energy channel.
  • Setting up, operating, and troubleshooting on a variety of equipment, including but not limited to video cameras, video projection, video conferencing, still photography, and analog and digital audio recording. May require using equipment already in the classroom or bringing in additional equipment depending on the project needs. May train or provide guidance to other staff.
  • Making recommendations for purchases and repairs of digital media equipment. Diagnose and resolve digital media system problems. Creating cost estimates for different equipment options. Providing stewardship of university resources.
  • Expand personal energy knowledge by attending UE class lectures, reading news and informational articles, and watching curated energy videos.
  • Other duties may also be assigned.

Work Environment

Precourt Institute for Energy is a teamwork-focused and collaborative work environment. The Digital Media Specialist reports to and works primarily with the Understand Energy Project Manager. The Digital Media Specialist is also a member of the Understand Energy Web Portal Project team, which includes the Project Manager, Managing Director, Web Developer, teaching team, student contributors, and other energy resource experts. In addition, the Digital Media Specialist collaborates with and supports colleagues on the Explore Energy team (Precourt’s student engagement program), including monthly meetings and annual offsites. The Understand Energy Digital Media Specialist will also connect with other staff and directors at various Precourt and Doerr School of Sustainability meetings, check-ins, and social events.

To be successful in this position, you will need

  • Bachelor’s degree and five years of relevant experience, or combination of education and relevant experience.
  • Advanced technical experience using digital media equipment and software for video recording and editing.
  • Strong knowledge in production techniques including videography, compression and file delivery, and other production formats.
  • Broad knowledge of all aspects of professional quality productions, including field and studio camera, lighting, sound, and editing.
  • Understanding of online video environment and online distribution, including experience with YouTube channel management.
  • Demonstrated ability to perform repairs on a wide variety of audio, visual and computer equipment.
  • Ability to adapt equipment setup and provide alternative setup or workarounds if necessary.
  • Ability to manage a variety of simultaneous projects within tight deadlines, excellent organizational and time management skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, mature judgment, and diplomacy required to interact effectively with and provide customer service to a broad audience.
  • Ability to work independently as well as effectively in a collaborative team environment.

The expected pay range for this position is $70,000 to $102,000 per annum. Stanford University provides pay ranges representing its good faith estimate of what the university reasonably expects to pay for a position. The pay offered to a selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal equity, geographic location and external market pay for comparable jobs.
